Did New Orleans last year and really enjoyed it, but I find it really enjoyable running through New Orleans with everything to see. It is one of the more expensive races if I remember correctly.

It's just a run. If you enjoy running or it's something that you want to get into then go for it. It gives you a goal to train for.

All depends on the race director. I did the Rock N Roll full in Vegas in 2011 and it was an absolute disaster. A complete and total dumpster fire.

That being said, I have heard good things about San Antonio. They're alot like Ironman branded races. They will cost you more money, but it will be more of a "spectacle". More crowd support, usually a bigger/better expo. BUT, the post race parties are usually better at smaller local races.

whats the hype? Either you run 13.1 miles or you run 26.2....or you dont.

What else is there to hype?

I've done Little Rock and NOLA

I much, much preferred Little Rock.

NOLA sucked.

these are typically a bit more expensive, right? they are supposed to have bands throughout the course and whatnot, free beer afterwards, etc

I'm not a fan of rocknroll races. Too expensive for the experience. Typically more crowded too.

And isn't little rock a different organization? With the Epic medals?

Did NOLA half marathon about 4 years ago. It was my first half marathon and I enjoyed it. The bands along the way are cool, but since you are just running by them they are kind of pointless.

This.
If you can find a well run localy directed race, I would do that instead.
I did the NOLA rocknRoll the first year they were putting it on and it was funny that they didn't want to offer any free beer to the runners. They had to be talked into it and finally ended up giving everyone two MGD's or something like that.
The food was also an extra charge and they had long as lines and ran out pretty quickly if I remember correctly.
This was a few years back, so maybe that aspect has improved, but it is indeed expensive.

I have done the full ones twice in San Diego and once in Tenn. Lot of fun. Do it.

I've done these types of races and alot of local stuff too and they both have their positives and negatives. I like the energy that comes with these races.

I can go find a beautiful course to run by myself on my own. For me, races are more of an event than anything else. One of the big reasons Ironman can charge $750 for an Ironman race, and HIITS charges under $200 but goes out of business in a couple years.

Disney charges the same for their half as they do their full (and for their 10K as well), but I think it's worth it.

I did the same a few years ago (Goofy), but that was the last year they did not allow rollovers or anything so I spent all that money and just got the T-Shirts.
