I've located a 2002 Ford Excursion with the 7.3litre engine with 150,000ish miles. It is in really good condition and was used mostly on a farm to move livestock. The guy is asking 11,000 and has new tires, brakes and a few other maintenance items completed. There are no mods, just a straight from the factory motor and suspension. What does the OT think about the 7.3l? What about the transmission? Anything I should be looking for when I go look at it? The vehicle is a few hours away and I don't want to waste my time or money going to look at it without having some info. TIA

150k miles is nothing on that motor. Transmission may be on the way out though.

And this is not Britain. It's a "liter"

7.3 Powerstroke is one of the finest diesel engines ever put into a vehicle.

Yes, buts coupled to one of the shittiest transmissions ever put into a vehicle. (If it's the original trans.).

Possibly.

I know 5 people who have the 7.3 and pull campers probably 20-25 weekends a year and use it to haul deer lease things in the winter and none of them had any transmission problems.

We had an excursion with the 7.3, my mom totaled it with about 250k miles on it.

Downshift and Bueche are correct. Ford used the A4OD behind the 7.3- it was originally designed for use in large sedans- see your grandma's towncar.

My experience has been 185,000 miles of moderate use and they go pop.

With that said, I'm quasi actively looking for a mid 90's box style Powerstroke and don't even consider the trans. when I'm looking. That would be less than a 4 hour swap job.

Mine (99 ...7.3) lasted 175 k.....put another tranny in for $1400, supposedly built heavy duty . I am now at 215k and i do quite a bit of pulling horse trailers. Overall I love the truck and turned down an offer to swap keys on an 05 with half the miles

Look for oil in the coolant tank. See how much it smokes when you floor it. Look/ smell for leaks. They are great motors but expensive to work on.

The company I work for has dozens of 7.3s in the fleet. Water pumps and EGR valves seem to be a common issue. We've rebuilt maybe one transmission in a 7.3 that has 400K miles. Solid motor.

My 7.3 engine blew at 120k miles. The #2 cylinder cracked the block while pulling a trailer to odessa. Everyone I talked to said that is unheard of... I have the $14,000 receipt to show for it. So for no issues with transmission. I would have gotten rid of it but need it for work and couldn't afford a new one.

I have an 03 F250 with the 7.3. I have 192k miles and (knock on wood) have had zero issues. I pull a tractor from time to time and a 24' boat from time to time. Never had a ball in the bed. Mine runs an shifts like a dream. Never been touched or had mods done. I plan on giving it to my son to drive and i dont have kids yet...

Thanks guys! I am looking at this as a vehicle to do some traveling. I will be converting the back into a quasi bedroom/storage area. Extra batteries, generators, stove, etc.

What should I expect for fuel mileage? Are there any recommendations for bumping that into the 20s?
