I've only ever played Silent Hill 2 and that was when I was 12. I've seen the movie and loved it. Now that I've watched the trailer for the new one I was thinking about making a purchase of one of the games.
Any recommendations?

The way I was introduced to the games is rather weird/creepy now that I think about it. I went to Blockbuster to rent a baseball game, got home and instead found Silent Hill 2 in the case.

Figured I would play it since I couldn't return it. Started playing it and it scared the shite out of 12 year old me but the storyline was pretty captivating. Just the eerie feeling of being alone somehow made the game more special and unique to me

I've watched bits of 1 on a lets play. It looks pretty good. The beginning of 2 is the creepiest opening in a game I've ever played.

I thought 1-4 were pretty good. After 4 they started to go down hill.
There is an HD collection for PS3/360 that includes SH 2 and 3. Those are both good but I hear the collection had some major glitches upon release. Not sure if it was patched.

Silent Hill 1 is a must-play; you can download it from Sony network for pretty cheap. SH 3 is solid, although it tries too hard to be an action game. Honestly, the best after those is Downpour, which has moments of absolute brilliance but is hampered by bad enemy design and annoying mechanics.
