I have seen a few people on this board asking questions about OBJ and what to expect from him going forward. Personally, I'm fully on board the OBJ bandwagon.

In case you missed it, OBJ's stat line for his NFL debut was 4 receptions (5 targets), 44 yards, and 1 TD in his NFL debut.

And as impressive as OBJ's final stat line was, he could've had an even bigger game:

quote:

Giants quarterback Eli Manning missed Beckham two other times when Beckham was streaking wide open down the field -- once on a sideline route, and again on a play in which Beckham ran down the left sideline with his left hand in the air, trying to get Manning's attention before Manning threw underneath. Smiling afterward, Manning admitted the first miss, "Is the kind of play that's going to look bad on film." Beckham also scorched Falcons cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford for penalties, one of them a holding call in the red zone, the other a pass interference call for a 25-yard gain.

Leading up to the game, the Giants said they were going to be cautious with the rookie WR:

quote:

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones expects the Giants to be "exceedingly cautious" with Odell Beckham in his season debut Sunday against the Falcons.
Beckham is the Giants' No. 4 receiver; he's yet to pass Preston Parker. The No 12 overall pick in May's draft has missed a ton of practice time. He knows the playbook for the most part, but the expectation is Beckham will play around 20 snaps versus Atlanta.

However, despite planning to play him for only 20 snaps, he played approximately 30 snaps. And after the game, Coach Coughlin said they plan to increase OBJ's usage:

quote:

Giants coach Tom Coughlin confirmed Odell Beckham's hamstring emerged from Week 5 unscathed, and his role will grow moving forward.
Along with Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz, "OBJ" will get favorable matchups with the Eagles and Cowboys over the next two weeks. "He seemed to be fine today, there wasn't an issue," Coughlin said Monday. "We will push him along even further now." Beckham played just over 50 percent of the Giants' Week 5 snaps, registering a 4-44-1 receiving line on five targets with a long PI penalty.

I've seen some people suggest that OBJ being the #3 WR on the team limits his appeal. This would be true for most offenses, but not this one, as the Giants lead the NFL in 3 WR formations.

And the addition of Larry Donnell to the Giants offense may actually help all of the Giants WRs. As Dan Graziano (ESPN Giants beat reporter) writes:

quote:

My personal belief is that the Giants are loving all of the media attention that tight end Larry Donnell is getting, because their dream scenario is that teams start devoting more coverage to him and leave Cruz and Randle open to get the ball in their hands and make plays after the catch. What Donnell has delivered so far is incredible, and a testament to a coaching staff that knows how to get the most out of its personnel. But the ideal formula for this offense is getting the ball in the hands of its playmakers and letting them make moves and run. As long as teams aren't prioritizing Donnell in overage, I imagine they'll keep throwing him the ball high and letting him go up and get it. But if teams do start paying more attention to Donnell, I think the Giants would love a chance to take advantage of the coverage gaps that show up elsewhere as a result.

This prediction by Graziano turned out to be true last week, as the Falcons focused on taking out Donnell, who finished the game with 0 targets and 0 receptions.

I'm not saying OBJ is going to make or break your team this season, but he's worth rostering in 12 team and 14 team leagues. If you are in need of a WR, look no further than OBJ. I think he is already a solid flex option, especially over the next 2 weeks, with matchups against Philly and Dallas on deck. Ideally, you would stash him to see if his role continues to grow. Personally, I am probably flexing him this week in my 14 team league.

Slow your roll Mr. Less. It's still the Giants. You can't trust anyone in that offense.

You don't think he is worth rostering in 12 or 14 team leagues?

Sure, but he wouldn't touch my starting lineup. I have a hard time starting Victor Cruz, and he's their #1 option.

In 12 or 14 team leagues, all of the Giants skill players have been startable - Eli, Cruz, Jennings, Reuben, and Donnell. If Odell is becoming a big time deep threat, then he is definitely in the mix to start. 6 more weeks of byes and that team throws it 30+ times a game.

Randle is awful. Odell will surpass him as the No. 2 WR in a few weeks

+1

I'll actually be playing OBJ this week pending a trade away of Benjamin. McCoy owner didn't trade for my Ellington + Benjamin yesterday He traded Cobb and McCoy away for Murray instead which seems a bit excessive...

Randle should have two more TDs in the past two games. Bad call on TNF and his foot was out last Sunday. He just happened to score the next play. You obviously havent watched Giants games this season.

Odell is a rookie and they're inconsistent. Randle will go deep and be a factor in the red zone.

I'd say OBJ is a much more polished receiver considering he was mentored by Cam Cameron at LSU. I think for the rest of the year 700-800/5TD's is quite in the realm of possibility for him.

Randle is the leading WR on the team even with Odell in the game last week. You're being very optimistic if you think Odell will outproduce Randle THIS YEAR in fantasy.

I think I should have clarified "more polished receiver". I didn't mean Reuben, I mean among WR in this past draft class.

Define startable.

Jennings and Donnell were the only consistent players. Eli, cruz and randle likely lost owners games if they started them

Adding Beckham to the mix only hurts all the pass catchers.

Not against the Falcons he wasn't. But you should know that, Atlanta is the #1 ranked team vs TEs

Randle is the #2?

He leads the team in targets

Targets last 4 games

7
10
10
10

He's their only WR over 6'. He's been solid for them, and is actually coming on right now, rather than taking a back seat to Beckham.

As far as Beckham, he's worth adding to your bench, but he isnt going to be a guy that you can play every week, if at all. Unless Someone gets hurt.

the Giants, in the Eli era, have always had that cocktease WR3, like Steve Smith, Manningham, Randle more recently. When they were forced to start games, they were viable. But a lot of times they flashed talent, and people thought they were going to produce, only to be 3rd in the pecking order and upsetting a lot of people. THat's Beckham this year. If he is even that valuable.

Still trying to figure out who died and named you resident Fantasy Sports Board troll.

Ole Yeller is still alive and well, FWIW

Cruz "should have had a TD" last week too. Manning threw a poor ball and DB knocked it away

I'm not trolling, I'm giving you insight that you would normally not see anywhere else. Key to Championship.
