Folks, you can complain all day about the defensive schemes and in-game calls, but my observation is that the main problem is a lack of tackling. This team is very poor at tackling. Is that a coaching problem? Is it youth? Is it lack of strength conditioning? I don't know. But even more than better schemeing and better defensive play-caling, I think this team MUST tackle better if they hope to have any success at all.

miles said that if a player doesn't touch the ball carrier it isn't a missed tackle though

When the defense is not good, you can point to a lot of areas that need improvement...tackling is just one of many.

Tackling is just the tip of a very big iceberg

Borderline great point.

Either he's the wrong athlete for the position, the defensive play call was wrong for the offense, the player missed an assignment or the offensive player made a great play.

I disagree, in that, a player can completely whiff (I seent it!) and not make any contact with the ball carrier and it could be counted as a missed tackle. However, a player flying by 7 defenders who appear glued to the ground? Hard to call that a missed tackle. "Dazzled by offensive player's acumen" does not a missed tackle make - generally.

So many last year on here were down on LSUs D, while bragging on the O, and the D was ranked higher than the O in the SEC and Nationally last year.

This year the D is on another level, again plenty of returning starters on D. Think LSU misses Ego and Freak much?

Last summer many on here many said LSU was better off without them.....obviously not.

Tackling is a major problem but this isn't anything new and this isn't just for LSU. It has been this way for many years for everyone. Everyone wants to make the ESPN highlight real with a huge hit or strip and that comes at the expense of tackling.
