This story comes to us from Badass Digest, which says that Marvel is contemplating keeping major Avengers characters Thor and Captain America (and possibly Black Widow) out of Avengers 3 so that they can both keep the actors under contract and avoid renegotiation. With Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans soon to be done with their existing deals with the studio, the idea is that the company would take those characters out of the spotlight for a while and focus on newer Phase 3 characters- like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and other "secondary characters from the MCU" who will get the chance to "stand up and prove their worth." Then, at a later point in the franchise, Marvel would be able to bring both Thor and Captain America (and possibly Black Widow) back, which would obviously be a very big deal.

This would suggest that Iron Man could be the original Avenger who sticks around and brings all of the new guys together (the story makes no mention of Hawkeye and suggests that Hulk could be off-world by the time Avengers 3 comes rolling around).

Does no Cap really mean no Chris Evans and make it more likely we see Bucky or Falcon take over in Cap 3? Also sounds more likely something happens with Hulk in AoU and we end up seeing him GOTG2. Sounds kinda like Marvel is trying to be cheap here but if this is true it sets up a lot for phase 3.

Eh. Evans has said that the deal is the deal. He isn't closed off to more movies like all the rumors say,

The big problem would be the cost, though. I could see him extending his contract if they give him room to direct movies.

ScarJo and Downey alone cost them $70 million for Avengers. Chris Evans reportedly got a combined $3 million for Cap1 and Avengers. If they want him to stick around, they'll have to pay a ton.

If you're looking to cut costs, I think Black Widow is expendable. Downey isn't just yet. But he's only under contract for Avengers 2 and 3, so they'll probably write him out in the third.

The reasoning seems way weird (what are they saving these characters for solo movies or a distant Avengers movie?)

That said, i wouldn't mind seeing a scaled down version of the team ala the Kooky Quartet or the team following it. Some combination of I.M. (guess he'd have to fulfill the Cap role), Hawkeye, Quick Silver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Wasp (if they can pull off using an insect sized superhero in group fights) and the Goliath version of Ant Man. Oh, and Black Panther.

Could this team fight Thanos or will he not be in Avengers 3? We know War Machine will be in AoU so maybe he will take on a bigger role in phase 3.

I think we'll see a Secret Avengers type movie with Cap 3 and they'll come up with a reason for him to be MIA in Avengers 3. Then after a whole batch of Phase 4, they bring Evans back for Avengers 4. Giving him that break from acting he wants until like 2020. Same for Hemsworth, minus the break from acting.

Also sounds more likely something happens with Hulk in AoU and we end up seeing him GOTG2.

James Gunn already said no more humans will be added to GoTG 2. Which means no Banner, which is highly unlikely. Then again that could have been misdirection.

I'm hoping that they are trying to introduce some more main characters to set up the actually Infinity Gauntlet story for Avengers 4. Avengers 3 could be the movie where Thanos begins actually collecting the infinity stones and by the end of Phase 4 he has them all and the gauntlet...bringing about the epic battle with pretty much everyone featured so far.

Also, spoiler for non-comic readers......

They could make half of the Avengers disappear right at the beginning of the movie, just like in the comic. Obviously I'm just grasping at straws here and absolutely none of this is confirmed, but this is something I wouldn't mind seeing

That's ridic. Downey is worth it but ScarJo is not. They could've gotten a lesser-known for Witch and no one would've griped.

Well I don't know what her up front was. It may have been reasonable and since she was a bigger name, she got points on the back, plus points for breaking even (even though Marvel said the break even point for Avengers was 1.1 billion. Such bullshite.) That's the deal Downey Jr got, and why he got at least $50 million, possibly as high as $70 million for Avengers, and reportedly more for IM3. He's costing Disney a TON of money for an ensemble film that can most likely do as well without him down the line.
