Right outside my outdoor kitchen, I have 3 hibiscus plants that got ate up by mites. I sprayed them, but it was too late. They are surviving, but they look like shite. So, I want to just pull them out and replace them with something that looks better. Since this is right outside my kitchen, I was thinking some herbs or vegetables that you would typically plant in the fall. But, because it is fall now…I’m not sure that herbs are a real option for me. It is a raised bed about 3’ wide and 8’ long. Landscapers of the OT…what say you? What are my herb/vegetable options? If this is not a good idea…then what are some good ornamental options for the fall in Baton Rouge?

rosemary, spanish lavender, and spicy basil. you can plant all three anytime. all 3 smell and look awesome. not showy but nice texture on the basil and rosemary. the lavender has the obvious color.

they will all make it through the winter OK? I thought about some basil but someone else told me it would die off in the winter?

the rosemary should do fine here assuming we don't have a winter like last year. mostly anything you plant, aside from some dwarf camellias will die back in winter. you can always cover them to protect them during hard freezes

If you go this route, put it in a planter. Mint will take over your bed / lawn.

It's nearly as bad as morning glory.

variegated ginger will definitely die back with a freeze.

you either love or hate lantana. i personally don't like it. it runs and i hate the smell when its cut.

I like lantana...but I agree that it runs, gets really woody as it matures and it doesn't smell great when cut. However, it does put out a lot of color in the summertime and butterflies/bees love it.

The problem is...it will die back in the winter too and I don't want just some sticks sitting right outside my windows.

if you want evergreen you're going to have to sacrifice color generally. i would go with the herb kitchen garden. it smells great and its useful.
