So what about the LSU D?

Look I'm as excited as anyone that Harris will start but don't forget QB wasn't the only problem.
What makes the rant think that all our defensive problems are solved now that Harris is the QB?

D will be a work in progress. They did look better last week, granted against a much inferior opponent.

Here's hoping they fool me again because yeah, I'm concerned about that middle. It looks VERY soft which is kinda depressing because our DBs seem exceedingly legit.

Beckwith starting would (hopefully should) help...

we need a rover that keeps his on the qb. we have plenty of athletes that can do the job.

I like our chances against Auburns run game a lot better than Bama or Arky.

If Harris and the LSU offense is able to sustain some drives and give our defense adequate time for a breather that is at least a start. The achilles tendon of LSUs defense has historically been that they are on the field too long.
We know our defense is soft in the middle, but if these DT's can get a little more rest they may be able to put up a fight late in the game.

It won't cure all of them, but they can't score if our offense is on the field. Having the ability to sustain drives on the ground and through the air helps the defense b/c it means potentially less drives for Auburn.
The best defense is the other team's offense sitting on the bench while we are driving.

I agree with all this

No one said they are all solved, but you're an idiot if you don't realize that having a competent offense will make any defense look better.

The offense affects the defense and vice versa. Having an uptempo offense on the field longer will keep the D fresh and allow them to play better

They had a good game against A&M and then promptly followed it up by allowing a 3-8 (0-7) Arkansas team to come in to Tiger Stadium and exceed their SEC YPG avg and put up the second most points they scored against a SEC opponent (only A&M's god-awful defense gave up more.) it was only thanks to the QB every hates now that LSU avoided one of the most embarrassing losses in the Les Miles era
They have been absolutely gutted on the ground by the only two teams they played that had an offensive pulse. They've given the most 20+, 30+, 40+, 50+ and 60+ yard rushing plays thus far of any team in the SEC. The DBs are excellent, but taking off the P&G glasses I see no reason to believe that the defense will all of a sudden figure things out against a good AU rushing attack

We match up a little better with Auburn than Miss. St. but you are right we still have problems on D. All the more reason to have a QB in that has the ability to put up points.
We can't rely on the D to win games for us like in the past---teams are scoring more and more (we need to be able to stay with them).

The amazing thing about last year is that we all bragged on finally having an offense. Yet the defense ended up ranked higher in both the SEC and National stats.
I agree on TAM last year. I figured we would have to score 40 plus to nip them at the wire. Instead the Tigers shut them down.

Harris at QB gives us a chance at scoring points, and we need points this season to win. We knew going into the season that our DTs would likely be a weak link.
If we get better play at MLB, then maybe we can slow some teams down and cut down on the big plays we give up.
Our best chance to win is to score early and often and make the other team play into our strength, which is pass defense.

Welter had a great game against Auburn last year. Did he switch position?

But the biggest hope for now is that the Defense will spend less time on the field. Losing D Thomas is a huge blow but hopefully a couple more youngsters will step into that void. Not having the two TF DT's has really hurt the depth there IMO. The big kid from Florida would have definitely cracked the rotation by now if nor for the red tape.

Yep.
My hopes for the D:
- Get better every game. We don't have to stink ever again as bad as we did vs State.
- Auburn has good athletes and a scheme that works well. Any possession we can keep 'em out of the EZ is a minor victory (right now).
