Selling iPhone 5 on Ebay

I just sold my 16gb iPhone 5 with Verizon on ebay. I've sold a few things on ebay before with relative ease, but this is turning into a pain in the arse. It ended up selling to some dude in Belarus. He won't pay the money until I do a bunch of stuff that he asks first. He wants IMEI number and wants me to turn off Find My iPhone. I can understand wanting the IMEI number to make sure it isn't stolen, but why does he need me to turn off FMI? I told him I would turn it off and clear the phone once he pays me. He replied saying he won't pay until I turn off FMI.
Anyone have experience with this before? It just seems shady that he won't pay and keeps asking for more.

Fugging foreigners man. I always sell US only. They're always trying to do some convoluted bullshite.
I would just ask him to cancel the sale.

If you don't turn off find my iPhone, you can render the phone unusable remotely. Any regular buy back service requires the same thing. You should have already done that when you reset the phone back to factory before selling.
Edit: from buyers perspective, what if the seller is refusing to turn off find my iPhone because it's not actually their phone and they don't have the password?

Well, yeah. I will definitely do that before I ship it. Why do I have to do it before he pays?

See my edit, how does he know that you have the password to disable it? Maybe you're trying to sell him a hot phone.

So this is normal procedure? I guess I'm a little gun shy of dealing with some eastern euro or russian.

having been burned purchasing an iphone (had no idea how many hoops i would have to jump through) i'm not surprised this has gone south.
dont those 'swappa' type sites protect both parties by brokering in the middle?
i can't imagine buying or selling a smartphone on ebay..just too risky.

I would call ebay and ask them to cancel the transaction due to suspicion of fraud. plus never ship a phone to the outside US b/c you will get screwed over money wise and you'll be out a phone.
Relist it and sell it to US states only. It'll sell.
A old co worker of mine sold a phone to someone in England. Once the phone got out of US customs his tracking number became obsolete. The person in England said that he never received the phone and started a claim.....paypal ruled the claim in the England guys favor and refunded him the money.....my co-worker got screwed over money and a phone.

I've heard stories of phones getting bought on eBay, raided for working parts, returned with broken screens or internals and its left to the seller to somehow prove he didn't ship a defective phone. I wouldn't trust eBay, they will side with the buyer. In person sales only or selling to reputable companies (Amazon, gazelle, etc) for me.

Thanks for the input everyone. Thought I could get more money on eBay. Didn't think about the hassle. I will contact eBay about cancelling today sometime.
