I work for one of the biggest companies in the world. We got an email last week saying that all healthcare benefits for retired workers have been revoked. So basically you have been retired for 10 years with benefits and now you are cut off. Is this legal to do?

If you work for one of the largest companies in the world, the attorneys who want to represent the retireees will be soon calling, so we will find out shortly.
I'm sure ERISA has something to say about this.

Are retirees completely cut off? OR are they being pushed to Medicare for primary and company benefits for secondary payment? For those younger than 65 what is the plan?
Seems that the ACA wants to push people into the pools for coverage. Some companies are allowing a stipend for you to buy your own. Is this the case?

I am not totally sure. I am no where near retirement age. I know for those that havent retired yet there are no health care benefits for you when you retire. I was just asking for a coworker who is about to retire. I will try to get more details. Thanks

a lot of companies and even some unions have taken health insurance from retirees
Back end raising of the retirement age to 65, when you can get Medicare/Medicaid
retire early, have no insurance....

Under ERISA, retiree medical benefit generally don't vest. Therefore, they can typically revoke them at any time.

Can't be taken away if a union contract in place.
At expiration of contract, company could ask union to drop the benefit and union could agree. Union gets another benefit for current workers and retirees are SOL.

This
Unless specifically contractually obligated, no entity (in this case, your employer) HAS to provide healthcare benefits ad infinitum merely because they historically did so.
As An Aside: As crappy as it might sound, if you sit on the senior management/ownership side of the desk, in many instances this action could become a question of survival or failure for the company.
