He's not that highly rated outside of Louisiana. But yes, he's overrated by Saints fans.

Nationally, he's considered a solid NFL coach, which he is.

Obviously.

I see you don't agree, is it with everything he wrote, or just parts of it?

His comment wasn't an attack on Sean Payton FWiW and it seemed to come from a neutral stand point IMO.

Payton is more highly regarded around the country than by Saints fans.

That couldn't be further from the truth

Payton is highly regarded around the country but the only fan base capable of thinking he's the best or one of the best is the home teams fanbase which happens to be saints fans.

This isn't a slant it's just simple truth. Why would the rest of the country think he's the best coach? More so than the home fanbase?

You're being baited into a debate that tricks you. If the rest of the country over rated him you'd never hear the end of Payton talk on national sports channels because there would be that demand for more, but there isn't.

Nationally he's a well received and very respected coach, the only potential to over rate him would come from the home fan base, that goes for Any and every coach.

Yea, that is bullshite.

He's more overrated by the rest of the country than New Orleans IMO. New Orleans fans love him for sure, but we get irritated with him abandoning the run

ESPN - #3

Yahoo - #5

Reddit

Seems like Nola fans are pretty level headed to me

When you do an onside kick in the Super Bowl and it works, that adds a lot of potential

That doesn't make any sense. What coach has demand on national sports channels?

Also, does Les Miles ring a bell?

Saints fans are upset right now, of course they are.
It's understandable every team will have ups and downs, but if anyone said he's one of the best ever or best in the NFL currently where would it come from? Saints fans, once the win a game or two they'll be back on board the PAyton train like upon his arrival from the year suspension or when the saints won the SB.

This happens to every team who wins it all, they get whipped up in the frenzy of appreciation and theres nothing wrong with it, its just how life works.

And yet there is Sean Payton, on national publications, ranked with and even ahead of them

By your logic, here are the top NFL coaches:
