(CNN) -- Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Tuesday he's "seriously looking" at a potential run for the Democratic nomination.

"We've had a lot of discussions among people I respect and trust," he said at the National Press Club in Washington. "And I'm seriously looking at the possibility of running for president, but we want to see if there's a support base from people who would support the programs we're interested in pursuing."

Pretty strong candidate.

Ex Virginia senator. Navy guy. Viet Nam vet who also served as Navy secretary and assistant defense secretary.

:partisanhatoff: Hillary and Webb would be a formidable ticket.

I lost my respect for Webb when he acted like a dick when Bush was asking about his son in the Marines.

He completed his term - he just didn't seek re-election.

Holy crap - just read this. He was awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

quote:

The Navy Cross is presented to James H. Webb, Jr., First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On July 10, 1969, while participating in a company-sized search and destroy operation deep in hostile territory, First Lieutenant Webb's platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex that appeared to be unoccupied. Deploying his men into defensive positions, First Lieutenant Webb was advancing to the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. Reacting instantly, he grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers.

Accompanied by one of his men, he then approached the second bunker and called for the enemy to surrender. When the hostile soldiers failed to answer him and threw a grenade that detonated dangerously close to him, First Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture, accounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel. Despite the smoke and debris from the explosion and the possibility of enemy soldiers hiding in the tunnel, he then conducted a thorough search that yielded several items of equipment and numerous documents containing valuable intelligence data. Continuing the assault, he approached a third bunker and was preparing to fire into it when the enemy threw another grenade. Observing the grenade land dangerously close to his companion, First Lieutenant Webb simultaneously fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body.

Although sustaining painful fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the aperture and completely destroy the remaining bunker. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Webb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

A term in which he really didn't do anything

He comes across as a guy who doesn't know what he wants

So now he thinks he wants to run for President?

No thanks

That's interesting. I felt like W was the a-hole in that exchange. I remember Peggy Noonan blasting W at the time.

If I remember correctly all he did was ask how Webb's military son was.

There are different versions. Here's my take:

Basically the president asked Webb how his boy was doing. Webb said he wanted to get him out of Iraq (kind douchey to say to president at the time). Then Bush said "that's not what I asked I asked about your boy" (could be douchey depending upon on how he said it - but he could have been trying to be personable and set aside politics) - then Webb said "that's between me and my boy" ...I don't think you should talk like that to the president.

It's interesting b/c if the Ds had a Clinton/Webb ticket that means VA would almost certainly go to the Ds.... which means unless Rs win Florida, it's game over. If I were a betting man, I'd put money down on Marco Rubio being the R VP candidate...unless Jeb gets the nomination. They have to win Florida.

I think the days of a VP delivering a state are over. Bentsen didn't do it in Texas, Ryan didn't for Wisconsin. Heck Gore couldn't even win Tennessee.

Guy sounds like he was a badass. Is be interested in his policies because I don't know his stances. I do always seriously consider any person as president who served in the military though

Seems an impolite response in general.

He's a conservative D

pro gun rights
hard line on immigration
against women serving in military (good luck with war on women)
He has his issues though.
