Should I get a streaming device (Roku, Chromecast, etc) or build a HTPC?

I don't have cable and have to hook up my laptop to the TV to watch Saints games on firstrowsports or other sites. I'm just tired of losing access to my computer because it is connected to the TV. Which do you think would be better in the long run?

I use a Mac mini for such purposes. Works well.

Chrome cast has never worked well for any of the shitty online NFL feeds. Not that it looks good straight from the laptop either. I think there are roku channels that might work, but I just got a roku and haven't really played with it yet.

Shameless bump. Any help would be appreciated. I'm leaning toward getting the streaming device now until I can get all of the components for the htpc.

I have a feeling that there won't be any official support for illegal streaming like firstrowsports on the major streaming boxes. This is from 2013, so things may be different now, but it sounds like to get firstrowsports on Roku you have to run some go between software on your PC, like Plex or PlayOn. LINK /

I use my PS3 for legal streaming, so maybe someone else can tell you different, but if illegal streaming is important you may be better off putting that $100 into your HTPC rather than a streaming box stop gap.

I highly recommend the Roku Streaming stick. Only $50 and comes with a remote or option to use an app.

Also with Roku you can get so many free tv apps, and also there are 3rd party apps for Roku you can install from online.. like Ustream, and use to have a JTV 3rd party app that was awesome (RIP jtv)

BTW have you heard of Plex?

If not then wow.. You don't need to build an HTPC.

You can get plex on the roku or chromecast... Now plex has like a $5-$7 monthly service fee, but it is WELL WORTH IT.

Plex allows you to stream ALL of your video files, regardless of format (mkv, mp4, avi, etc..) to your roku or chromecast. It works better with roku, because there are more options like turning on captions and playlist playback, rather than having to continue to click to the next movie.

Plex is absolutely amazing. I just store all my movie or tv shows on my computer's hard drive and it streams all of them to my roku or chromecast in an amazing organized format. All wirelessly in AMAZING quality..

thats a little gushy but its pretty good.

why would you pay monthly? the free version does all the streaming from your local files you want already.
