I've read often that we should "let the QB's loose"

exactly what does that mean?
do you think either of our QB's read defenses well enough to allow them to audible out of a call?
do you think either QB goes down his progressions before throwing the ball or just pre selects his WR?
Do you think our pass protection is good enough to be a passing first team?

We should tailor the offense to suit their strengths.

No, but when your opponent is 118th in FBS in pass defense, maybe you should use the pass to set up the run. I know, Einstein thinking, mind blown ,etc

nobody's advocating for a pass first offense.
I believe right now, the distribution of plays is like 70/30 run to pass.
balance it out more to help out your run game, get those defenders out of the box, and make them pay when they do decide to stack it.

open up the offense. quit protecting them with handoffs. other teams play true freshmen/sophmore qb's without completely restricting the offense. Of course they are pretty much running the offense...the offense just sucks
