Once Upon a Time and Sleepy Hollow

I like the idea of spinning off of a well known story with something new and fresh where you have somewhat established characters but enough material and space for it to be its own. It can even be insightful... Smallville was a good example of this.

But the networks go overboard with these new ones. After the first season or just a few episodes, it's no longer about moving forward a plot and developing characters. Writers/producers seem to feel the need to add shock to every episode to the point that it ruins the show; it's odd for events to seem unrealistic in a world that is meant to be unrealistic. I'm not sure how else to explain it.

I'll still give Gotham a chance, but I don't have very high hopes for Fox pulling it off for any decent amount of time.

If they keep it dark, it will be good.

I'd have more faith in HBO or Showtime in that regard. That's why I mentioned "network" in the OP

Dramas need a solid end point. And you need to know that ending from the beginning. Gotham can only go so far with the villains given. It also has a strange situation where if there are success stories of stopping villains, why is Batman needed at all?

That's a good point. We basically already know that Gordon can't be successful on his own.

That's an interesting thought about the end point. It brings up the speed of the show. Some of these characters are kids. We're looking at about 10-15 years before he becomes batman.

Another interesting point. My guess is that they bring in other characters who "lose" so that Gordon can have some victories.

There are tons of examples of failures of dramas because they are really set up to be mini-series.

V and Flash Forward come to mind first for me. There's an event/problem, and there is a solution. Instead of solving the problem, each season a BIGGER problem occurs.

I really don't want this show to appeal to the "Pretty Little Liars" crowd.

I don't have faith in the network.

If it were made by HBO or AMC it would automatically seem more interesting

IGN.com Gotham Review

IGN had a decent review on the pilot. May be worth a read.

And I think you're right in that networks tend to pile it on. I plan to give it a shot because it sounds like it does have some potential and at the very least I'm stoked about Donal Logue and Rome's Bruno Heller being behind the show.

But as you said, it's Fox. It's not like they have the best history of not royally fricking shows up. I just hope it's not the case here.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm interested to see how much of it's Batman: The Prequel vs. how much is Criminal Minds.

If it's great, it can be Rome with Batman characters, but how long can they keep that up?

well it's not like batman puts all the villains away for good. they constantly escape and he has to fight them over and over. why is it unreasonable to think they would escape once caught by Gordon?

Never gave that one a chance. Pretty good? I thought it was based on a recent comic with that story arc?

I could barely finish the pilot. It was so slow. Have they mentioned if Gotham will be a procedural? If so, pass.

Also, when does Gotham take place? 2014? So no Bats until about 2030?
