Ok, just realized before I started digging that I need to call and make sure there aren't any things I may cut while digging to install the wire. The suggestion I need is, while I was looking and thinking about ask this digging, a shovel isn't gonna do the job.. What would you recommend doing for about an acre lot, renting some kind of machine from triple A, getting some post and pound them in the ground and run the wire above ground, or hire someone to do either A or B? I would really like a solution for A before even thinking about B or C.. What type of machine would you suggest me renting.. The ground is pretty hard so your typical edger would be out of the question.. Thanks for any input..

How shallow can the fence be laid? A ditch witch works well as long as you don't have tree roots. An acre, phuck a shovel.
ETA- phuck a shovel anytime.

My neighbor borrowed my gas edger. He angled the cut and ran it both ways to cut a fee. Worked for him.

Lawn edger is the ticket. Install the wire about 3" down.

I've used a cordless reciprocating saw for roots. I've cut through old bricks and small roots with a DW, eat a good meal.

Does the city come out on the weekends if you do the call before you dig thing... It's free isn't it..

If you had a bucket truck, you could run lines through the trees like I do, its fricking sweet setup

If it's only 3" as FF says, don't wait or worry.

3" worked good for me. I did over 5ac's. Worst thing was when a storm up rooted a few trees, I had to go back and splice wires.
Oh, if you have a pond, don't waste your time. The collars are not water proof.

use the edger, no need to call city. with the roots, just run the wire under the roots if you can

Rent this! Only way to do it.

Use water hose or small pipe to protect the wire from the weedeater where it runs above ground. If you need to cross a sidewalk or driveway get a concrete blade for your skilsaw and cut a shallow 1" groove then fill with silicon after your lay the wire in it. I wouldn't worry about calling 811 for digging less than a foot.

My dad and I used one of these for about an acre. Good times.

Did mine on an acre with an edger... in August. One of my biggest clusters. Rent a machine, and it'll be much less work.

You'll be pleased, until the day you watch your dog standing at the precipice of the danger zone, ratcheting his body up like a wild hog in heat and launching himself across the wire (on a setting of 10). I think my kids learned the F word that day.

Had a pit bull and a Boston terrier. The PB would have nothing to do with that wire but the BT would would yelp and run like a scalded ape across it.

I would hate doing that when I know you could just buy a transmitter device which emits a barrier
