just trying to get rid of all the Apple seeds littering this board.

-I tried Swiftkey a few days ago and just couldn't get into it. Went back to Google Keyboard.
-I've been using Textra for about the past week or so and like it every so slightly over Hangouts at the moment

I really need to be schooled up on rooting androids. If anyone can give me the basics after the root so I don't brick my phone that would be greatly appreciated.

Did you already root it with towelroot?

This thread should be your starting point

If you don't want any bloatware, install this ROM with these instructions. However, you will lose USB file transfer and wifi tethering.

If you want another debloated ROM, there are several to choose from. I know it sounds technical and can be intimidating, but the best thing you can do is read threads on XDA and search anything you don't understand. The first time I rooted I only did it to unlock wifi tethering. It took about 2 more months for me to start flashing ROMs because there is a learning curve. But once you get the basics, it is super simple.

That is where I get 100% confused. Why do I need to use safestrap? Also I can't flash cyanogenmod to my android partition because of the locked bootloader? Very, very confusing past the towelroot portion.

Safestrap is the app which allows for ROMs and other files to be flashed on locked bootloader. However, you can mostly only flash files that are based on your baseband (I think that is the right term), so you will only be able to flash other NC5 ROMs and recently some Google Play Edition ROMs which are the best in my opinion.

Once you install safestrap, open the app, click install recovery, and now every time you reboot, you will have a brief alternate screen pop up which will allow you to get into safestrap recovery (not the same as android recovery). From there you can do a bunch of stuff. This is where you get to have fun and mess with your phone's insides.

ETA: flashing is just a fancy word for installing things

You Cyanogenmod ROMs can not be flashed on your device. I have an ATT GS4 so I can't flash them either.

Also, the first time you go into safestrap, I suggest making a backup (click on Backup and then swipe as directed)

Make sure you save all your rooting/ROMing files including backups onto an SD card.

Root Samsung Galaxy S4 Active GT-I9295
If you have the regular Galaxy S4 active with unlocked bootloader, you can easily root it using Chainfire’s CF-Auto-Root. Though the developer has not released a separate root package for S4 Active, you can still root it the CF-Root file meant for the Galaxy S4 LTE. Being similar in nature, the old method goes file with this newer device too. However, before proceeding to root your S4 Active, ensure that you have done the following things:

Also download the rooting package and extract the zip: CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505.zip
Make sure you have installed Samsung USB Drivers or Kies on your computer. If you have not done it yet, download it now: Link
Turn on USB Debugging on your phone. If you do not know how to do it, read this guide.
Charge your phone to have at least 60% battery.
Okay, now you can root your S4 in a few simple steps by following the steps given below:

Turn off your S4 Active and put it in Download mode by pressing the Volume Down, Home and Power buttons simultaneously for 2-3 seconds. When the warning screen with yellow triangle, press the Volume Up key to continue to Download/Odin mode.
Open the Odin folder and launch the program by clicking on Odin3-v1.85.exe.
Now connect the device using USB cable and wait till you see Added!! in the message box on Odin.
Do not mess with any other thing on Odin and hit the PDA button. Select the “CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505.tar.md5? file.
Then click the Start button and wait for the installation to finish. When it is done, the phone will reboot automatically reboot.
Done! SuperUser has now been installed on your device and it should have root access.

Root AT&T Galaxy S4 Active SGH-I537:
The root method for AT&T Galaxy S4 (SGH-I537) has been devised by GeoHot and it is one of easiest ways to root an Android phone with locked bootloader.

Open Settings on your phone, tap on More tab and open Security.
Now enable Unknown Sources and Verify Apps options by checking the box.
Go to Geohot’s Website and download “ar.apk” by clicking the lambda symbol image.
Copy this Apk file to your phone and install it. It should give you a message telling you that you have root.
Now go to Play Store and download SuperUser app.
Open the app and update binary when prompted.
Done!

Okay Thanks for the walk through. So if I follow these directions line by line I will not only have rooted my phone but also installed a custom Google play edition ROM running Android 4.4.4?

I'm not familiar with Textra. Does it integrate with Google Voice like Hangouts does? Or is it just a texting application?

Thats just the root. The problem with the s4 active (sgh-1537) is that pesky locked bootloader.
