Kansas GOP trying to force Democrats to field candidate in senate election

How in the world can they force the Democrats to run someone in the election? This court decision may very well hand the Senate back to the Dems.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach isn’t giving up yet.
The state Supreme Court Thursday ordered him to strike Democrat Chad Taylor from the November ballot for U.S. Senate, ruling Taylor had complied with state law allowing a candidate to withdraw.
Just a few minutes later, Kobach — a Republican — said he’ll tell the Kansas Democratic party to pick a replacement by noon Sept. 26.
It wasn’t immediately clear how Kobach can force Democrats to pick another Senate nominee. Kobach had asked the state Supreme Court to consider such an order in Thursday’s ruling, but the judges said Democrats weren’t a part of the case.
The Star's editorial: Court ruling a victory for Greg Orman and a defeat for Pat Roberts
Kobach said his office would review the legal options if Democrats fail to comply.
Democratic chairwoman Joan Wagnon declined to comment on Kobach’s effort. But she sharply criticized him in a statement reacting to the court decision, saying the Republican “cannot be trusted.”

Orman is not a democrat. He is an independent who will vote conservatively because of his constituents.

Eh. I agree with the ruling, but it's a dumb statement to say that Orman will back the GOP. There's a huge reason the other candidate backed out, and it's mostly to do with the national Dem party.
FYI, this whole court battle was funded by the Dem party on his end due to their campaign funds flooding in.

Absolutely.

Politics at its worst
Nah, not politics at its worst, but pretty bad nonetheless. Would not be possible though without a thoroughly complicit press.

Thursday, the court — in an unsigned opinion — said Taylor’s referral to the state law was sufficient to officially remove him from the ballot.
Is this unusual? I ask that because of the following statement.
quote:
“The Kansas Supreme Court deliberately, and for political purposes, disenfranchised over 65,000 voters,” said Roberts spokesman Corry Bliss in a statement.
“Liberal activist Supreme Court justices have decided that if you voted in the Democrat primary on August 5th, your vote does not matter, your voice does not matter,” his statement said.

You sure about that?

Orman has not said whether he would back a Republican or a Democrat to be the next majority leader of the Senate, but his politics clearly fall left of Robert’s hard right positions. In 2008, Orman briefly ran for the Senate as a Democrat, but pulled out of the race well before the primary.

I just don't see Orman voting far left as a senator. He'd lose reelection.

I'm quite surprised to read that coming from you. Orman is a Democrat in every sense of the word except calling himself one and if he wins will caucus with the Dems no matter who wins the majority and no matter what he has promised. He knows the Dems will have the majority in 2016 either way and he will make sure he's in good stead with the party in these next two years. I hope Kansans are able to see through this entire manipulated Dem. withdrawal.

What most of the stories are not mentioning is that Taylor eked out a 53%-47% win over Patrick Wiesner in the Aug. 5th Dem primary -34,390 votes to Wiesner's 30,557. In a situation like this, there should be a system in place that states that the runner-up will become the nominee in the event the winner withdraws before the election. Wiesner spends all that time and money campaigning to finish a strong second, and all those who voted for him are the ones who really got screwed over. If the Kansas Dems had any class as a party, they would award Wiesner that spot on the November ballot.
But we know why they won't.

You see, this is the backstabbing shite I hate when it comes to politics. I haven't kept up with this Kansas senate race much but I had still had suspicions the withdrawal was not even close to being legit and was being influenced by people not affiliated with the campaign itself. Reading around and catching up now on other political blogs about this race, yeah, it's basically confirmed for me.

What does Kansas election law say about this issue? That should be the sole basis for the decision.

The Kansas SC opinion is very clear and puts Kobach in his place, a guy whose intent is to help Roberts keep his seat.
Don't worry, Orman won't win now that every other commercial is tying him to Obama. It's nice having all of you experts about Kansas politics around to clear up the issue.
