Do black people find the premise of ABC's Blackish to be a tad racist?

quote:

Meet the Johnsons. There’s Andre (Anthony Anderson) – but you can call him Dre – the family patriarch with a great job and a wonderful wife in Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross). The two have four kids, including Zoey (Yara Shahidi), Jack (Miles Brown) and Diane (Marsai Martin) and Andre Jr. (Marcus Scribner), whose unwitting ancestral defiance will end up giving Dre a heart attack. And then there’s Fishburne as Pops, the old school presence serving as the probable impetus for this show’s narrative thrust.

Here’s the deal. Even though Dre’s life is seemingly perfect, he wonders if the arrival of the American Dream replaced his sense of cultural heritage. So he decides to up the ante on his family’s “blackness” and tries figuring out ways to honor their past while preparing for the future. This is the kind of idea that would work really well as an indie flick, but will possibly equal out to a string of stereotype-driven one-liners without a sense of anyone’s independence. The dashikis! The sitcomish homogeneity of this picture is striking.

Poor fishburne.... Probably would have been better off reprising his role as cowboy Curtis than doing this shite

It actually sounds like an interesting premise.

But I'm sure the execution will be horrible.

Larry Wilmore is a co-creator. It should be at least passable on that alone

I don't care and probably won't watch it, but I haven't heard anyone in my family or any of my black friends complain about the premise.

This looks to be the worst show ever created. I thought it was a joke when I saw the preview a few months back.

I misread the title and thought that this show would be a cartoon about racists at SeaWorld.

I think that show would be better than the one described in the OP.

1. ABC targets women, so WTF

2. Black people aren't a big demographic in the world of network TV, ask WB

From the trailers:
Interaction between adults and kids looked funny
Interaction between adults and other adults looked painful

Dad: son I want you to hold onto your heritage
Kid: all I want to hold onto is my first boob

The previews look good. I'm hoping it will end up being a poor man's "Cosby Show" for the 21st century.

Dad: All of this coming from a mixed woman, who technically, isn't even really black?
Mom: Well if I'm not really black, could someone tell that to my hair and my arse?

they'll only find it racist if they find some way to gain something from finding it racist

There will likely be more hipsters on twitter and fb who bitch about it

Eeeeehhhhhhhhhh I don't know.

If there was a sitcom about a white family living in downtown detroit or Philly who wanted to embrace their whiteness, I wonder how that would go over.
