What are some great books to read to my 8 year old girl ?

figured this was the best board... Looking for something to really suck her in to a grand story.. perhaps even a series ...Something to show how her awesome books can be .... but not a "children's book"... Isn't that Narnia series supposed to be good ? something like that...thanks

Narnia. Doesn't matter if you go in chronological order with respect to events in the books or not. If you do, book 2 comes first.
The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper.
The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques.
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, though this may be too controversial.
I would also Google Newberry Award winners because I know in forgetting some.
ETA: Also, check out Roald Dahl (e.g. Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and the book the Phantom Tollbooth. Boxcar Children and Matt Carpenter's sports books. Judy Blume was excellent as a kid.

Agree with others on the Narnia series. The Harry Potter books as well. The Hobbit would be a good jumping off point at that age if you want to get her into Tolkien as well by reading aloud.
Where the Red Fern Grows if you're willing to shed your man tears.
Knowing she's a girl the Little House on the Prairie series might be good. Read the series myself when I was a little bit older and still have the books.
Not exactly what you're looking for but I always enjoyed reading Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein aloud to younger kids. Really great for getting them into poetry too. The Giving Tree is another.
