I don't think ive ever seen a movie that I liked so much as a kid but think is such crap now. The acting is horrible and some of the situations are ridiculous. For example, why would Victor's goons throw Axel through the window of their own office building? And didn't they have a big budget for this? Why is the window so obviously breakaway glass? Murphy is good and his jokes are still funny, but everything around him is terrible.

I've never seen such a huge blockbuster turn into such crap over time.

You mean to tell me that the effects and acting from 30 years ago is different than it is now?!

Only the elite 90s comedies seem to age well (Dumb/Dumber, Something About Mary, etc)

They had the ability to do effects more realistically than that in the 30s.

Do you really think time has anything to do with acting quality. It's not like cell phone technology, dude. Acting is acting.

Many 80s comedies have aged pretty well, IMO. Stripes, Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, etc are still pretty solid.

This was one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade. I feel like we were all hypnotized at the time, thinking that this was a great movie. They even made two sequels.

You just have to go into it with the right mindset. Enjoy it for what it is, not what it isn't. It's a cheesy action movie with some comedic relief. I don't have practically any expectations for the acting in movies like that. It's a fun silly movie.

Oh my god!! They used breakaway glass??? Burn this film! Burn it!

Seriously, this film is still just as funny and good as it always was.

As you said, acting is acting. So it was as bad in the 80s as it is now. Has nothing to do with age of the movie, you just grew up and became a bit more... discerning, shall we say... and now think it's a bad movie. And if you think technology in the breakaway glass department hasn't changed, then you're a fool.

It is what it is and remains a classic comedy in my book. To me, it epitomizes 80s movies and is one of Eddie Murphy's finest films.

Bowfinger is by far his best work.

We have very different definitions of what qualifies as "best work." I thought that movie was fricking terrible.

Acting evolves. What once was considered good acting would be destroyed as flat today.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I still watch this movie a few times a year and it is great.

No way dude. Judge Rienhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox all still hold up very well.

You do that again, I'm gonna shoot you myself.

Give me one example of acting that was once considered good but is not "by today's standards." I can give you plenty of examples of 80s acting that are still revered today and always will be.
