David Nabarro made the announcement as the World Health Organization (WHO) described the health crisis as "unparalleled in modern times".

It has killed 2,461 people this year, half of the 4,985 infected by the virus, the global health body said.

There has been criticism of the slow international response to the epidemic.

Later, the US president is to announce plans to send 3,000 troops to Liberia, one of countries worst-affected by the outbreak, to help fight the virus.

Troops brought the 1918 flu outbreak from overseas to America after World War I.

So it begins.

A Force for Good. This is the kind of action
I can get behind when using our troops. It also helps our image and reinforces the US global moral compass.

They need medical centers, treatment, and training on how to safely deal with this. They don't need American troops on the ground IMO.

Troops on foreign soil is usually bad for our image.

Sending experienced medical personnel? Maybe. Sending troops? Hell no. Send the WHO or UN. Keep the troops out of it.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

frick NO!

Why would we send 3,000 potential carriers to bring the virus BACK to the United States?

This is idiotic!

Send money, send supplies... but don't send people into a viral hot zone. fricking dumb... and it's going to get people killed.

aid to Liberia I can get behind.

Sending troops there, is beyond idiotic. They are soldiers. They cannot fight a virus.

Send doctors, send people versed in infection control guidelines and freaking basic hygiene.

Sending soldiers there is asking for our soldiers to get sick.

Stupid.

The military encompasses far more than just fighting troops.

It is understood the US military will oversee building new treatment centres and help train medical staff.
