President Obama is making calls to lawmakers on Capitol Hill urging them to support giving him authority to arm and train Syrian rebels in a vote later this week. The White House is “gratified” by early signs of support for the president’s request, it said, but Obama will to continue to call lawmakers in the coming days. “We’ve seen public statements from Democrats and Republicans in senior positions both in the House and the Senate indicate that they support giving the administration the necessary authority to ramp up our assistance to the Syrian opposition by training and equipping them,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. “So we’re gratified by that show of bipartisan public support for this urgent priority.” The White House is seeking explicit authority to establish a center to train and equip members of the Syrian opposition, who are battling both the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The facility, likely to be hosted in Saudi Arabia, is a key component of the president's strategy to combat the terror network, with the administration saying it needs a competent rebel fighting force to prevent ISIS from achieving a safe haven in Syria — or the Assad regime from benefiting from airstrikes against the terror group.

Has this ever worked out in the long run for the US? Honest question. Dating back to at least Reagan's tenure, it seems that every president wants to arm some locals, somewhere and those arms nearly always end up used against the US.

Arming Israel is about the only country that has not used them on us later it seems.

So we want to arm a group that's getting their asses kicked by TWO different armies.

Yep, sound about right.

If the "moderate rebels" are already giving fricking reporters over to ISIS to kill, we don't need to be sending them weapons.

According to Politico, which obtained a draft of the legislation, the proposal would grant the Obama administration the authority to arm and train the Syrian rebels. It further will require Defense Sec. Chuck Hagel update Congress 15 days before the armament begins and additional status reports every 90 days.

We really have a bad habit of not learning from our previous mistakes.

All House and Senate members running for reelection in November are sitting on pins and needles on this one, while most of their November opponents are loving that it will be voted on (other than those House members who are running for Senate seats and thus also have to go on record on this issue). Only those 64 Senators with safe seats can vote on this one without losing sleep the night before the vote.
