NY Democrats seek citizen rights for illegal immigrants

It would bar police from releasing any information about them to the feds, unless it involves a criminal warrant unrelated to their immigration status.
Under the proposed legislation, undocumented immigrants could also apply for professional licenses and serve on juries.
The plan hinges on Democrats — who now control both the governorship and the state Assembly — wresting control of the Senate from Republicans, who oppose immigration amnesty.

Eh. It's their state. Let them do whatever the frick they want - they are the ones who'll have to answer to their constituents.

Of course, but it doesn't end there, the goal is to get them the right to VOTE !

Even if the Dems win the NY Senate, there's definitely precedent for members to flip parties for the right offer.
Two Dem Senators flipped under David Paterson's term as Governor over his attempt to choose a new Lt. Governor, in contradiction with existing law saying that the President Pro Teme of the Senate got to pick the appointee instead.
Paterson's lawsuit eventually upheld his choice, but the two Senators flipping held up things in New York for quite a while.

I don't get what you are saying. They can extend any state-law rights they want to to them, and they are under no obligation to enforce federal law (in fact, the USSC has said that they can't).

All things the STATE can allow them to do if they amend their constitution (which I presume they will).
They will still be unable to run for federal office, because federal office requires citizenship.
I think this is an incredibly dumb move, but it's their state and they can do whatever they want.

Yes & no.....yes it's their state so they can do what they want BUT when the constituents get pissed off enough they'll move to FL and I don't want anymore from NY

Funny. I though the USSC said that the Feds were the ones running the show on immigration policy.
