google hangouts not displaying names for text messages

I have a nexus 5 and use hangouts for my text messages. I never use hangouts or gooogle+, so i have it turned off and only do text messages.
for some of my contacts, hangouts wont display the contact name, just a phone #. I have saved the properly formatted # and still get this problem.
Is there a way to fix this ?

I actually have that same problem. No idea how to fix it.
