Francis Scott Key, waking up from his slumber aboard the HMS Tonnant, came out on deck to see the American flag still waving proudly over the ramparts of Fort McHenry after a grueling overnight bombardment.
The sight so inspired him that he began writing a poem, which he published six days later, that he called Defence of Fort M'Henry. It went on to be called The Star-Spangled Banner and in 1916 became the official anthem for the United States of America.

Why would the bombs be bursting in the air? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the bombs somewhat?

Our national anthem should be battle hymn of the republic.

See that flag in the morning sun? Last night we could still see it because of the light from munition fire. It still flies over this country of free and brave people.

The bombs Key was referring to were the cannon shells being fired by the Royal Navy. They exploded over the fort, sending thousands of bits of shrapnel flying down onto its defenders.

I like the lyrics but the music (from a German beer drinking song) is jus turrible. Soviet national anthem is the best music but lyrics are silly .. lot's of references 'freedom.' Yep, the USSR was really into individual freedom. Yep.

Attended it last night. Great event and one of the better fireworks shows I've ever seen.
