Go to Walmart. Buy whatever they have. In 2 years, go back and get your replacement.

Post the question in the Outdoor Board (OB), if you would like answers.

Sure you got that right? You could practically use a weed-eater for that. My yard is typical and is about 9,000 sq ft that is sodded. I've got a push mower.

1000 SQ ft
Is it hilly?
do you wash you mower as soon as your finished mowing?
is there lots of obstacles?

31.5' x 31.5' is roughly 1,000 sq ft
Get a push mower

The wider the cutting deck, the more likely you'll scalp parts of your lawn if you have uneven or sloped ground.
Wait, what? Get a push mower and don't be a pussy.

I did 3 months of research before I purchased this one.
Here's why:
You want a Briggs and Stratton engine. The poster that recommended the Craftsman definitely is spot on in that the model he recommended has the B&S v-twin engine. I had no need for that much hp personally but that engine is very highly regarded.
All of my research online and after talking to several different people led me to 3 conclusions:
1. With the John Deere you are paying more for the name.
2. Craftsman is made by Sears and I have doubts that Sears is going to exist as a company for the duration of the warranty.
3. I heard no bad feedback from anyone on Husqvarna.
So, I did more research and learned that Ariens is made by husqvarna. They're all almost identical but for the decals. I wanted the hydrostatic transmission and ultimately settled on the 19 hp 42 inch deck version for 1199.00.
One thing to that I was real intentional about was purchasing one right out of the crate. I didn't want a mower that had been chained up outside for half a year, and did a bit of due diligence to make this so.
Good luck! I love my riding mower and it's turned my most dreaded chore into a joy.
