I ask this question as I ponder about the the current state of our global economy. We are now, more than ever, connected with other people of other cultures, religions, races, etc across the globe. From my own personal experiences and upbringing, I can truly say I am a better person and can relate to practically anyone due to my wide range of cultural, religious, racial, and ethnic experiences. It could be that my particular experience is rare, but I feel like these experiences are more tangible than they look. These experiences have helped me in relationships, at work, in school, in sports, etc. I do not know if I would be where I am today if I werent able to empathize and converse with a wide range of people.

This article about from the washingtop post about 3/4th of white people not have any other friends also caught my attention LINK. This article would say that its not necessary to be ethnically and culturally competence and diverse because success is attainable without it, when coming whites to other groups. So is this competency only pertinent for minorities, or do you think that it will be must have skill for all people going forward?

I believe empathy and being able to relate to others goes a long way in life. My barber and I recently spoke about how all high school kids should work in retail, volunteer at a hospital and work at an old folks home. Those are 3 places will you will have to interact with people of all sizes, sexualities, genders, creeds, races, ethnicities, and cultures and everyone needs to be given the same and equal treatment. It really gives you a diversity of experiences that could help you and others later on in the future.

I'm open to dialogue and I'm just curious to see what you guys think!

Honest question... What kind of response are you rally expecting to get out of something like this on the O-T?

It's healthy to be able to pick one or two ethnic groups to be a positive outlet for one's rage.

I like Italians and Mexicans.
Can't say I know any personally but I like them.
Especially the female ones.

How do you know you like them if you don't know any personally?

I loathe this line of thinking. Oh, you think that people should work in certain professions to gain experience or insight into how another segment of society lives? That's great, you do it. Leave people alone, and let them choose the path in life they feel is best for them.

I'm only on this earth for a short period of time, why the hell would I want to waste it doing shite I don't want to do? That's called unhappiness. We should strive to do things that makes us happy, not unhappy.

And to answer your question, no, of course you don't need cultural & ethnic diversity & competency to be successful. That's asinine. Who's determining success anyway? You? For one, you think the thousands of blue collar jobs out there need that to be "successful"?

I live in Minnesota after growing up in the south, so my experiences now are very different. I think when discussing politics and world events it is important to understand other views, but my job only having white people doesn't make us less successful

BS. Your company must hire certain races and genders at a certain percentage to be viewed as a good company by the U.S. government.

Don't get me started with that kind of line of thinking by our politicians.

Are you white? If so, you should apologize for having so many conveniences being defaulted your way. Well, that's at least what I was told in a recent diversity and inclusion training that I had to attend.

On a more serious note and to answer your question....No, I think you hire the best people (regardless of color) for the job, fricking period.

It is not necessary to have "empathy" for others to succeed. Neither is it intrinsically "noble" to have friends of any particular race, religion or creed or variations thereof. Where and with whom one chooses to associate is largely value-neutral as long as one does not seek to deprive others in some way.

That said, I think that any way one chooses to broaden one's horizon is generally a good thing for personal development. It's pretty scary to me how small and insular some people's lives become. Some people just aren't curious about the world. And no matter how much you try, they have no desire to see anything beyond their own nose.
