A simple question ?

I don't really know if this is the place to discuss this or even if this subject deserves discussion but here we go ! How does Southern Cal and No.Dame jump 5 spots each in the AP poll. Has that ever happened in the history of the world ? Do the media sports writers take their lead from the regular media by acting like they know shite? There are lots of arguing points pro and con ....But these 2 teams seem to have some sort of special dispensation from the Pope or something. Help me understand the rationale behind this thought pattern,please !

I would contend that ND deserved a 2-3 point bump for their 9/6 performance. Maybe, maybe 4 points but probably not. (Michigan was unranked, right? - but they were dominated, either way)
I'd say that Southern Cal deserved a 2-3 point bump for last Saturday. (Stanford WAS Top Ten, right?)
This early in the season, I'm actually ok with BIG moves in the polls... it should be VERY fluid in September.
But yea... 5 points each is a bit much.

Yes it has happened before and more than just 5 places.Some of it depends on higher ranked teams losing or just who you beat. I'll give you an example, if the Vols beat OU, they will jump more than 5 spots, not likely, but strangers things happen. I know UT is not ranked but did get some votes.

LSU went from 7 to 2 between the second to last and last BCS poll in 2007.

I have no problem with a team moving up 5 spots if they win a big game as an underdog........only if they are willing to drop that same team when they squeak by someone as a favorite.

My point is....LSU would probably have to beat the Seattle Seahawks to jump 5 spots. I don't know how good Stanford is this year but it's not like USC chewed up and spit them out. And Michigan ? I think beating Michigan is really overrated this year. What do you think Wisconsin will do to Michigan ?

ignore the polls.
Now that we have a playoff selection committee, the polls are meaningless, unless you're just looking for something to argue about - which to me gets very tiresome. Besides, the polls are horribly flawed, and should get zero of your attention.

Thanks for setting me straight. I must have lost my frickin' mind. I thought polls at least showed a sense of respect !

Are you saying that the selection committee will be better than the polls? Because if you are, you are sadly mistaken.

Stanford v USC was #13 against #14, if I remember correctly.

yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.
I'd rather have a bunch of people who understand the importance of their task debating objectively and at length which teams should be in the playoff. Hopefully it will be like the NCAA basketball committee, which I think we can all agree does a pretty darn good job, much better than silly polls.
The polls are simply a bunch of isolated sportswriters and/or coaches (who don't even fill in their poll, nor should they, because they're focusing only on their team and one opponent per week. Instead, they give it to their SID).
Give me the committee any day of the week.
The polls are a joke, and have been forever. And don't go talking about how good the BCS rankings are. Those are 2/3 polls and 1/3 computers. And of course the computers are programmed by humans, so whatever variables those humans want to use are programmed into the computer.

Don't sweat it. Things will work themselves out. I always believe that high-ranking will decrease that "wanting" drive from players

It sets up the future games that they play to appear to be bigger than they really are if their final rankings would be known.
Also, they need all the help that they can get getting into the playoffs when two or three SEC West teams would beat either of them in playoffs and just might take up two of the four spots if they don't keep their shite together.

That was a very unique situation where the SEC champ had just lost in their last reg season game and had 2 total losses. It also helps when two of the teams in front of you choke it up big time.
