How much space do you need for skeet shooting?

I have a buddy with some land in the hill country and we are thinking about getting him a skeet thrower as a gift. But we want to make sure it makes sense. I have read that 300 yards is a good distance to give yourself for a "safe zone"when shooting a shotgun. but I have also read that you need more than that.

What is the Outdoor Board's recommendation?

Odds are he's good to go. 300 yards is plenty.

Tell him to check state laws if he's worried.

that's about right, i'm never really shooting in a densely populated area whenever i'm shooting, so i've never really thought about it

Sheet shooting is light loads with small shot that doesn't travel very far.
Just check local laws as far as distance from residences/buildings.
I think Louisiana is 150 yards minimum from a residence.

IIRC, it is either 50 yards or 100ft from a road and that's it. Nothing about buildings

Chicken, don't get one of those ones you just stake in the ground. They always come out. A legit, sit on one works much better, and I always pair that with a hand thrower

The ones you stick in the ground are only good if mounted to something like a tire or sheet of plywood. The 'lectric ones are legit though. The safe zone of 300 yards should be plenty, either way.

Hunting or the discharge of firearms on roads or highways located on public levees or within 100 feet from the centerline of such levee roads or highways is prohibited. Spot-lighting or shining from public roads is prohibited by state law. Hunting from all public roads and rights-of-way is prohibited and these provisions will be strictly enforced.

I haven't heard of a safe distance from residence state law, but each parish may have their own. Where is this hill country you speak of?
