Do athletes play so long because they are broke?

Chauncey Billups retired after 17 years. Well past his prime. Champ Bailey is still trying to make an NFL roster. Just a few examples.
Are these guys broke? Why subject yourself to further Injury and a future of surgeries after you've retired just for a few more years playing? Or do these guys really just want to play?

Beats having a regular day job.

Chauncey Billups and Champ Bailey stand to make millions per year. I mean, I'd do it too.

Competitive spirit. These guys played at such a high level for a long time it is hard to come to terms with your body breaking down.

you know whats better than a lot of money?
more money.
the real answer is that there is no broad strokes answer. some guys need the money, some guys want to play forever, some play because they dont know what else to do, and other do it for all those reasons

the NFL veteran minimum for these guys is almost a million dollars a year. It's hard to say no to a million dollars no matter how much money you have.

Some might just love to play the game. Both Brady and Manning will supposedly play until they cannot do it anymore. Even with all the money, a lot of athletes just love the game.

Maybe cause they love the sport they play? There's nothing is rather do the rest of my life then play basketball all day.

Good point.
You just hear about how banged up they are years after, the medication and pain. Not to mention the concussion issue. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Junior Seau killed himself because he couldn't replace football with anything else.

If you love what you do, you will do it for as long as possible.

Some guys do it more for the money. Some love to play but are more cautious and value their life after the sport more than playing a few extra years.
And some just love to play and will keep doing it until they aren't good enough anymore.

When you make millions of dollars a good portion of your life, you have to maintain that lifestyle. So, yeah.

Some do. Some continue to play because that's all they know.

Why clock out when you can make an extra million or two?

If you work your whole life to do something you don't want to give it up early.
