Between Google and Apple, the smartwatch wars are over before they've even begun

We're stood at the foothills of a very large and formidable mountain that has the perfect smartwatch at its peak. It's still very early, not everyone's sure of their footing or the right course to take, but we are all instinctively drawn toward that pinnacle. The thing is, even with all the months and maybe years standing between humanity and its ideal wrist gadget, the winners of the race are already known. Google and Apple won.
Yesterday's Apple Watch launch spoke glowingly of the "seamless" integration between the wearable device and the iPhone. Similarly, when it introduced its ZenWatch at IFA, Asus said that the watch works brilliantly with its Zen UI on Android smartphones. Both are just positive spins on the fact that an Apple Watch or an Android Wear device without a smartphone attached to it is not a terribly useful thing to have. Most of them don't even display the time all the time, making them poor substitutes for watches.
The close working relationship between smartwatch and smartphone ties down user choice in another way. If you really fancy the look of the Moto 360, you'll want to combine it with an Android handset to make the most of Google's ecosystem. The same is true of the Apple Watch and iPhone: they'll work great together and fall apart when they are, well, apart. Windows Phone and BlackBerry users aren't being served by these devices at all.

wait so android users will buy android watches and iphone users will buy apple watches?
holy fricking shite.
holy fricking shite.

Seems to me that the android watches are brand-specific, which gives them a much smaller piece of the pie individually. 2 years ago, people would've been ok locking into Samsung. Now not so much.

I'm going to put my dunce cap on and admit that I haven't a single frigging clue about this wearable tech stuff.
I don't understand the market, the utility, the consumer demand, none of it.
Outside of fitness, Google glass seems more useful than any of these watches.

article is short sighted. When the iPod debuted, it was mac only. In 10 years I bet that android wear watches work with iOS devices and vice versa. They won't be able to have the same level of integration, but I guarantee they will work together to some degree.

i can see it..but then again i bought my brother a pebble last year and got to play around with it extensively.
1. notifications. probably bar none the most logical aspect of a watch is seeing incoming calls, texts, weather alerts, whatever. no need to look annoying in a meeting pulling out a phone to see this. this is really nice if you're in a late meeting and your kids are texting you asking if you're going to be late to pick them up. i can't tell you the number of 'late day' meetings i have where everyone's attention starts going to hell and the phones and fidgeting begins.
2. GPS..turn by turn initiated on your phone but then you just glance at your watch. more of an 'urban' thing like in a big city where you do alot of walking but i can definitely see the advantage here.
3. quick text replies (see #1) so by a simple flick you can respond to that annoying kid (or spouse) who's blowing your phone up because they want you to get wine at the grocery store on the way home.
4. fitness. big sector here. it starts as motion sensing and a HR monitor but eventually biometrics could detect a heart attack is occuring and call 911 for you. who knows..this area is WIDE OPEN and very little been done outside of fit bit and nike bracelets. combine that with a smartphone and boom.
thats just off the top of my head.
once these start to become ubiqutious, innovation will spike and ideas will abound.
then in 5 years they'll all do the same thing

I really like the idea of the vibration notifications with the watch. You don't have to glance, you just feel it vibrate to let you know when and which way to turn.
I am not a watch person though, so I have no use for it. I would like to see more glass type devices.

GPS and wrist notifications of calls or texts is really the only thing I'd be interested in. Still, probably not interested enough to buy.

Those are definitely solid reasons to get one, but I can't see them as a necessity. Nice to have? Sure.
It just kinda seems like the talk is about how wearables are the next device innovation and people will forget about phones. I just can't see that happening. Maybe years from now.
Full disclosure....I didn't get tablets either so what the hell do I know

i dont see google glass or 6" rectangular plastic screens you jam into your jeans pockets as the end of the evolution here.
i think watches are a more natural evolution for information/data at your fingertips.
i'm not saying thats where it ends..but i think its a step in the right direction from people constantly whipping out their phones now.
i'd love to see a breakdown as to what people look at their phones for. if its 50% notifications (facebook, instagram, texts, emails, etc. etc.) and we take 50% of that away..thats a huge win.

Where it ends is ocular/brain implants. I for one can't wait to become a cyborg with macro cellular bionics.

I don't get it either. Seems redundant to me if you already have a smartphone on you. I don't see any practical use for it outside of fitness, like you mentioned.

Yeah, I saw those, I just wouldn't personally use it for any of those things outside of maybe notifications. If I wanted to do any sort of reply for texting, email, or a phone call, I'd have to use my phone anyways.

We need a way to robotically clean that shite too. Don't want to find someone's spunk all over the place.
