a course with that reputation should never shut down the entire course for anyone. they don't need the publicity and certainly don't want to tell members they cannot play that day.

It's exactly what they said.
They have very expensive memberships at that club and they weren't about to piss off a lot of rich people they deal with on a regular basis to accomodate Obama wanting a tee-time at the last second.
Tiger Woods could probably have gotten a tee time if he wanted it because he doesn't bring a gigantic Secret Service detail with him that subjects the other golfers to a ton of crap.

I would guess so.
I once heard a story of Nixon (I think) being on the course when the SS spotted someone with a rifle in a nearby house, only to find out it was a dumb owner who lived on the course watching the president through a rifle scope in lieu of binos. Can't remember where that story is from or if it is true (Google didn't come back w/ anything). I've read a lot about presidents and SS over the years, so I'm guessing I picked it up from a biography.

Nah, I'd imagine it has more to do with not wanting to shut down their entire course on Labor day, because that would piss off their members
