The Verge has a video of using Apple Pay IRL and it honestly doesn't seem any more convenient than a credit card. It's more secure than a credit card, and once we switch to chip and pin in October 2015, it might be more convenient, but I was a little surprised at how long the transaction took. They showed using Apple Pay from within an app and that was quick as could be though, just select Apple Pay and then authenticate with your finger.

quote:

I just spent some quick time using Apple Pay on an iPhone 6 Plus, and it's remarkably smooth. The phone was loaded up with a handful of credit cards, and holding the top of the phone about an inch from the card reader with my thumb on the TouchID home button triggered a payment from the default card in about five to 10 seconds. If you want to use a different card, just leave your finger off the home button and you'll see a Passbook-style card stack at the bottom of the screen, which you can tap on to bring up the full list and pick the card you want. Then you just put your finger on the reader and you're good to go.

I think it will be more convenient because you won't have to carry the card anymore. That doesn't mean that it will be quicker if that's what you were getting at.

Something I never saw discussed; When I go out to eat what is preventing my waiter from taking a picture of my card and attaching it to his Passbook on his phone?

How does my bank know me by my Apple ID?

Um... then he would just use the number to buy things online... no need for him to try and add it to his passbook

Yeah, the "take a picture of a card to add it" better be an incomplete statement of the full process. It sounds like they are using Visa's Tokenization service which says you have to register cards and devices:

quote:

Token Management Tools

*Service Enrollment – Enroll and configure digital credit and debit products into the token service
*Provisioning – Deliver tokens to authorized internet connected devices and mobile applications for payment

*Lifecycle Management – Suspend, resume or delete tokens in the payment network and on devices
*Active Key Management – Access security and controls including domain restrictions
*Card Metadata Manager – Manage the card data and art presented to consumers

i haven't carried a wallet in years.

all my insurance cards, etc were scanned in a long time ago

i have a phone case with 2 pockets; one is DL and one is my debit/cc.

my other card numbers are stored in memory and if i need to order something using one of them online i look them up.

even my HSA card i can just read the number off to the receptionist at the doctor and she takes it that way.

been doing this since my HD2 days.

Apple confirms with the bank that it is in fact your card.

Are you really confused that someone else doesn't do the same exact things you do?

i'm trying to understand who apple pay will benefit.

do men still walk around with a wad of credit cards in their wallets?

women dont count..they're gonna have a purse full of shite no matter what and likely will never give a shite about apple pay.

What if your car breaks down in the middle of no where and your phone runs out of battery?

What if you're at an LSU game and you run into Shaq and want a picture with him, but your phone runs out of battery?

What if you're a few moves away from setting the all time candy crush record and your phone runs out of battery?

What if you are tailgating and want to check the Tiger Rant and your phone runs out of battery?

What if you have an important meeting, but you forget because your phone couldn't remind you because the battery was dead?

What if your house is on fire right now, but no one can reach you because your phone is dead?

Um....everyone?

Most places I go, I don't see people paying for things using their phones. They use cards and swipe.

If Apple has really gotten thousands of retailers on board with mobile payments...doesn't that literally help everyone?

Do the inductive charging power mats give off enough juice to immediately power up a dead phone? I can see a few years down the line where the POS credit card readers would provide power if that's a feasible solution.

That being said, I usually am aware that my battery is in the danger zone because it's usually in the danger zone from me using it. Going shopping with a dead or near dead battery would be like going shopping knowing you left your wallet at home, you probably wouldn't do it.

Everyone. The Visa Tokenization using disposable credit card numbers means you seriously reduce the risk of a cashier/waiter directly stealing your credit card, and you reduce the risk of hackers stealing your credit card number from a data breach. If in 5 years stealing Target's database of credit card numbers yields zero usable credit card numbers, then hackers won't waste their time and money trying to break in.

I was worried they might just focus on convenience but am glad they went with Security as one of the primary benefits.

i'm behind this 100% but i still dont see widespread adoption unless/until cc companies start forcing people into something like apple pay.

i would love to see the adoption rate in 5 years.

selfishly, i want more protection of my personal credit cards but is there enough understanding of the risk to get a critical mass of people (and merchants) on board?

we'll see.
