Looking into buying a new AC system.
looking at the 5 ton unit. My question is what kinda of cost savings in electricity will i see in a month by purchasing say a 5 ton 13 seer vs say 5 ton 16 seer or 5 ton 18 seer?? They say the higher the seer the better the electricity bill but how much?? I'm plan dumb on this kinda of stuff? and what is a reasonable price for parts and labor? thanks

I went with a 14, 2 years ago when I figured it amounted to a pizza a month in savings going to a 16 and the payback was like 7-8 years.

If I'm remembering right. It should be easier to calculate this stuff but it wasn't.

Long term residence? Spend the extra money on efficiency now. Out in a few years? Go cheap.

To me if you not gonna spend the money for a 18-20 seer, just get the 13.

20 seer will cost about the same to run as a ceiling fan supposedly.

The higher seer units are really money savers but sir, the price for these units(16-20 seer) are out of this world expensive. Get a 13 or 14 seer unit and make sure to hire a great company to put it in because installation (could go on for pages) is as important as the unit you choose. I've been in this line of work for 18 years.

I think the 14 seer rated units will be the epa minimum in 2015 - just not sure of the dates.

You are probably right. I just hope it doesn't make the air handlers too much bigger to achieve it like what happened from 10 to 13. They are already hard enough to get into some of these places.

I just went through this myself. I went from a 4 ton 13 seer to a 5 ton 13 seer. The 5 ton 13 seer with all parts, labor, install, etc was about $6000. The same unit in 16 seer would have been $9000+.

go with the higher seer. the government is actually changing the seer ratings in the beginning of next year. Companies won't even be able to sell 13 seer as the baseline for energy efficiency will be 14 seer. Go with the 18, it makes a noticeable difference.

I think parts have to be available for older system for about 3-5 years, as long as 13 seer units are available they can be sold - its just that they can't be manufactured. Some of the larger distributors or supply houses can maybe hold a larger inventory of the older seer units.

like the last increase in the minimum SEER ratings, anything produced prior to the date can be sold. just cannot manufacturer anymore lower then that SEER rating

and the manufacturers are all stocking up their inventories because of it....
