Taking the SO down to the moo state game and making a long weekend of it. She's never been to Louisiana and is a huge history buff. Outside of GameDay, was planning on touring a couple plantation homes around St Francisville. What are some other cool, interesting ideas around Baton Rouge... Old state Capitol? Civil War stuff? Any ideas?

If you are going to make a long weekend of it and were thinking of St. Fran, just get up early Sunday and take her all the way to Natchez. Beautiful antebellum homes and plantations. it's 1.5 hours north of BR.

See about staying at Dunleith

In BR:
The La State Museum is great for history. and visit the Arsenal and Capitol itself. All that can be done in under 3 hours. Could do that on gameday before the game and I'm pretty sure it's all free.

Make your way down to New Orleans. The French Quarter, and WW2 museum would be good.

The Port Hudson battlefield is interesting, if a little bland.

Around the new and old State Capitol buildings is a bunch of historical stuff. The Old Arsenal Museum is right near the capitol. Heck, you could spend almost a day at LSU if you hit the memorial tower, the old Law School building, PMAC, Tiger Stadium, etc.

There is more to do than you'll have time for.

I think this is closed on Sundays but could easily get up there Saturday if they don't explore the entire 6 mile trail. It's only about 20 min north of downtown. Lot of people don't realize how much area the Port Hudson Siege and battle encompassed. They fought from Jackson, La to the freakin MS River.

I think they still do tours of the USS Kid but Im not sure. Nottoway plantation is right around the corner and it pretty awesome.

I'd do both new and old state capitols.

Take a slow drive down historic highland road to see all the houses.

The old plantation home The Myrtles on Hwy 61 just north of St Francisville bills itself as the Most Haunted House in America, if you like that sort of thing.

Old state Capitol?

Yes and the New Capitol is historic as well. I'd look into a tour of the old Governor's Mansion too I guess.

Civil War stuff?

Nah, but you could find some around Port Hudson and other areas in St. Fran.

The whole area around the new capitol is cool. Pentagon Barracks, the garden, etc.

U.S.S. Kidd may be cool to check out, I haven't been since I was little.

LSU's campus itself is great to explore (architecture, Mike the Tiger).

Take a stroll through Spanish Town and Beauregard Town.

Other than that... Ehh... For historical stuff, you're better off in St. Francisville or New Orleans (obviously).

Capitol Park Musuem is great for people making their first trip to Louisiana. It highlights all regions of the state. The first floor is dedicated to Louisiana history and various industries of the state. The upper floor takes you on a tour around the different regions and showcases Mardi Gras and jazz. It now costs $6 per adults but open 9-5 Tuesday through Saturday. It rakes roughly an hour or two to visit depending on how much you read per artifact.

Bill Evans, legendary jazz pianist, graduated from Southeastern Louisiana.

Can you imagine a cool NYC jazz hepcat spending 4 years at SLU? In the late '40s yet?

Ironically enough, Evans credited several music professors there as being major influences on his work, and later said his years in Hammond were the happiest of his life.

If you want to pay homage, he's buried at Roselawn in Baton Rouge:

He got a nice spot, right under the tree.

Bring her to the capital, go up to the top and you can see the old fort from the Battle of Baton Rouge during the War of 1812. Then go to that fort
