It hurts if I press my index finger against my thumb, same with my middle finger. Should I be worried my hand will never be the same ?

I got it to stop bleeding and wrapped it up. I might need stitches though

If it "might" need stitches and you are concerned about a tendon lac, go to the ER. I'm an ER doc, btw. The doc can numb your finger and examine it to directly look for a tendon lac (and also check indirectly by the use of your finger). If he sees a tendon lac, he will splint you and send you to a hand surgeon.

how did you injure it? I had a crush type injury to my fingers on July 4. It still hurts but gets a little better every day.

I cut one 8 eight weeks ago.

Friday evening - I went it to get stitches and couldn't move it. The doc in a box, stitched me up and referred me to an ortho/hand specialist.

Monday - Still can't move finger, ortho suggest surgery asap.

Tuesday - have surgery on finger

TLDNR - if you can't move all or part of your thumb/finger and you need stitches you cut a tendon. Go to the Dr. asap.

They have these buildings called "hospitals" and "doctors' offices," with these people called "doctors" in them. These are trained professionals with access to a wealth of knowledge and specialized diagnostic equipment and techniques.

With that in mind, you come to a college football message board for medical advice.

Nice choice.

Listen to the Doc on this one. I have seen more than my fair share of hand injuries and any (ANY!) suspected tendon involvement gets referred to a hand surgeon for review. The hand is a unique and complicated piece of anatomy that you don't want to screw up. With all due respect to the ER MD who replied, don't let them close it up in the ER and tell you it is all good. Ask if they suspect any involvement beyond the lac and then ask for a referral.

BTW, you want to see a Hand Specialist (ask them if they did a hand fellowship and where) and not a general plastics guy. I have seen boob docs who feel competent to treat a hand injury and IMO that is not a good call. Most sports medicine practices will have a hand guy on staff or available.

Cutting a tendon is kinda like breaking your leg... if you can't use it, it needs to be fixed.

My advice to you is this: start researching physical therapists that specialize in hand therapy, because you are gonna spend a ton of time (and money) with one.
