I'm sure they're both doing just fine.

Luckily the South taxes gas at a far lesser rate than the northern states.

Add up gas tax, sales tax, phone bill fees, utility fees, etc, and we are all paying a retarded amount of our earnings to the government.

I feel like this an appropriate time to thank Obama for this.

I've been preaching this for years - but nobody wants to hear the awful truth.

You pay - whatever it is - $3.50 or so - and you get a gallon of gasoline. Out of that, the cost of production does keep a bunch of people working, from the oil fields or rigs, to the refineries, to the pumps. But, ultimately, the oil companies make about 4 to 6 cents per gallon, profit - your gas station makes anywhere from a half a cent to a cent and a half.

Uncle Sam (well all taxes combined, but still) makes 7 to 9 times the profit of your oil company AND retailer, combined. In California (and other high tax places) it can be 10 to 12 times.

And they don't do anything, directly, to put gasoline into your tank.

I wish more ignorant people understood this concept. I see it first hand how much the LA and TX economies are booming due to oil and gas. These are good paying jobs too.

And that "profit" that the big bad oil companies make doesn't go to a bunch of old white men who stash it in their safe. The average joe who works his arse off and invest his money most likely has some money invested with oil companies.
And I can't tell you how many blue collar guys I know who are retiring from big oil companies with nice nest eggs thanks to these profits and how they have been reinvested.

Someone help me understand.

So the US gets paid from oil companies per barrel of oil. Then said oil is refined, and the US gets the majority off the gasoline sales again?

Poor Exxon...they'll just have to settle for the highest corporate profit margin in history along with the rest of America.

WELL DESERVED

The government has EXTENSIVE involvement in helping to run the Exxon Corporation. Under their careful guidance the company turns a profit year after year. Its only right they're entitled to a bit of the profits.
