Christmas ski/snow destination suggestions

Family has never been skiing before and considering a Christmas vacation this year for a change of pace. Family of 4 with two older teenage kids out on Xmas break. Not looking to break the bank but want a good first trip experience. Suggestions?

Vail is the best ski mountain on the planet IMO. That would be a good place to learn. Can be very, very expensive but there are some affordable hotels.

Everywhere will be really crowded, I'd try to find another time to go.
If you can't change the date stay at one of the less popular places far away from denver
