THIS THREAD IS FROM LAST WEEK:Let me preface this by saying that you can't take much away from this game, but overall our D line looks very average. I could argue that the biggest reason for our success the past 11 years is our advantage on the D line over other teams. It is the foundation of our defense and the defense is the foundation of our success. What is going on in recruiting? Is it that LA just has not produced the level of talent that we are used to the last few years? Hunter and LaCouture are our two best and they are not even from the state. I know that a few have left early for the NFL, but I can't accept that as an excuse. It's happening all across college football. They are pretty young, I'll admit, but I just don't know if the talent is there.

We won't be an elite team, until we get dominant D Line play IMO. We don't match up well against Alabama and auburn, at this point. Am I off base here? What do y'all think the problem is and how or will it get better?

ETA:The d line looked awesome in this ULM game. I hope I was wrong about them. You also cant read too much into this game because Im not really sure how good ULM offensive line is but dang they looked good last night. The real test is next week against Moo St...and Devon Godchaux is a beast!

There have been a ton of DL leave early. Two last year. It's been that way since 2011 or earlier. It takes time to develop certain positions. DL is one of those.

With the secondary and linebackers we have IMO we can beat anyone.

we could not stop the run (like we are used to) last year, even with those two. Maybe we are just spoiled as a fan base to have such dominant play at that position the last 11-13 years, IDK.

what line am I about to cross? I can't give my opinion? It's the reason we have won so many games the last decade or so.

I understand your post, but I think we have guys now who will buy into the system, and not have their own agenda on the field, unlike at least one player from last years DT rotation.

I agree. The DL will have to step up quickly or we will lose a few games with our schedule. We will find out when we play Miss St. in 2 weeks.

I agree with your overall point.

We really need a Gilmore or Bain to take that next step. Watched Gilmore the other night and he looked pretty good, had a push albeit against weaker competition.

I share your concern, too. The talent is definitely there, though. Lacouture needs one more year of strength training before he's dominant. Godchaux and Neal are probably a year away as well.

I believe that this year will see adequate DT play. Alongside excellent DE's and LB's (the poster who scoffed at the LBers earlier just doesn't know football), the DTs should be able to get it done. We will net be able to rely on the defense to dominate, though.

Our depth at dline, and our elite secondary allowing us to gamble, should be enough to keep us in every game.

Teams like miss st and ole miss have a DLine I would love to have. Hopefully recruiting picks up on that side of the ball.

State will tell us something about our DT's. SHSU with a small OL had some success running up the middle in their first few drives . They were so far behind after that they gave up on it to an extent.

DTs, MLBs, QB's, and WRs were my question marks this year. the offensive players have looked better than I expected, but those three spots on D have me very concerned.

A quick glance shows we have signed a total of 3 true DT's since 2012 not including Valentine, who we absolutely need right now. I'm not a recruitnik but that is astonishing to me. One of those recruits is out for the season after punching a glass window.

LaCouture, while not dominant is good at holding his ground even with double teams (which is infinitely better than AJ last year) and that should allow others around him to make plays and be disruptive, which they haven't been doing.

I also place a lot of blame on the linebackers. Great linebacker play is essential in Chavis' scheme. We just don't have the playmakers on the first two levels like we've had. Kwon is the closest, but his aggressiveness can cause him to be out of position at times. He will only get better, however.

We are weak up the middle. The DTs are young and the MLB makes 90% of his tackles 5+ yards downfield. Arkansas, Auburn, Bama, and Florida are going to pound us until we prove we can stop runs up the middle.

D Line is strong. Middle runs worry me, but I am sure that adjustments will come with experience.
