Sen. Begich wrongly ties Republican opponent to horrific crime in inflammatory ad

quote:

Sen. Mark Begich, the incumbent Democrat from Alaska, has been forced to pull a television ad that said his Republican opponent’s actions as the state attorney general led to a gruesome murder -- a serious charge based on paper-thin evidence.

Begich released an attack ad the Friday before Labor Day that said Dan Sullivan was soft on sex crime during his 18-month tenure as attorney general. Begich and Sullivan are locked in a toss-up race, one of several that could decide which party controls the Senate come November.

So although Active’s plea agreement and sentencing happened in 2010, while Sullivan was in office, the mistake that led to Active’s shorter sentence happened more than a year earlier. (At the time, Sullivan was on active duty for the U.S. Marine Corps, according to his campaign.)

Additionally, it’s highly unlikely that Sullivan was personally involved with Active’s case and plea agreement at all, said John Skidmore, director of the Department of Law’s criminal division. The state handles about 40,000 cases each year, at least half of which are felonies -- so it’s "unrealistic" for an attorney general to be involved with individual cases, he said.

"There is no way that (any attorney general) would be involved in that sort of decision at that level at that time," Skidmore said.

Begich tried to pull a H.W. Bush/Willie Horton, and it is complete horse shite. This is going to backfire.

Begich must be really feeling the heat to run a lying, despicable ad against Sullivan. The difference between his ad and the Willie Horton ad was that Dukakis played a major role in Willie Horton's release

Not only was it factually wrong, they also cropped evidence to remove the true signatories. Basically caught at dirty politics. Not exactly a glowing endorsement for trustworthiness.

I completely understand playing dirty. Everyone does it. But sometimes politicians are listening to these "consultants" who don't have to deal with the fallout.

Sucks that Begich allowed this to go through. That will sting a bit.

You act like he was some passive victim. He had to have reviewed and approved this ad.

Not at all. He's not a victim. He's a moron who allowed his consultants to convince him that it was the right move.

Anyone who can be influenced to allow this type of ad deserves the downfall.

Gore was the one that originally brought up Willie Horton.

Willie Horton was Al Gore's idea. It was hardball politics in the 1988 Dem prez nomination, but morphed into racist fear mongering when GHWB did it during the general campaign.

I expect nothing less out of Begich.

He only won a slim victory last time because some US Attorneys railroaded his opponent in a case that got thrown out on appeal when the appellate judges started looking at the US Attorneys' actions, like covering up evidence, lying about sleeping with witnesses, etc.

RCP has only three polls out there on this race, but the most recent one by Rasmussen shows Sullivan with a 2 point lead.

The other two polls are from when the Republican primary was still ongoing, meaning Sullivan was not established as the Republican candidate, and showed a Begich lead but still less than 50% in support.

Whoever is pumping money and influence into his campaign has screwed him over. It's all out of state groups. They are focusing on the Kochs, abortion and this ad. They clearly don't understand folks up here very well.

They're using their standard boilerplate crap which plays well with the stupider parts of the Dem base but not independents or Republicans.

Same deal in Iowa, in between candidate Braley putting his foot in his mouth regarding farmers, getting into fights over chickens, etc.

Yep, he became senator because Stevens was railroaded. Really horrible thing to do but this seems like the new way to get someone out of office.
quote:

Schuelke testified this week before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he told Stevens’s former colleagues that the prosecutors in the corruption case were so intent on winning, they intentionally withheld information they were obligated to give the defense.

But their overzealousness eventually botched the case: A federal judge threw out Stevens’s guilty verdict and ordered the independent investigation after the Justice Department disclosed that evidence was withheld from defense attorneys.

Stevens, who died in a 2010 plane crash, was convicted in 2008 on corruption charges and weeks later lost his bid for reelection.

Their ads honestly seem to be aimed at children. Insulting how stupid they are. To be fair, Dan Sullivans ads are no better though some are much more positive.

Unrelated note, Ak. will have no Democrat running for governor against the Republican incumbent this year. The Dem. joined forces with an undeclared former Republican this week and will run as Lt. Gov. Strange turn of events.
