This year my millet came up thin... So thin the doves are lighting in it and picking it off the plants.

I have been saying we should just bush hog it low and scatter the seeds.
My friends who went in on the field with me want to disk it under once. I think this just buries the seeds.

I cut one spot and jumped about 20-30 out of it consitently..The other day we disked that spot and in about an hr 80-100 birds were in it. But yesterday, none were there. short term, it may attract them, but long term I feel like i am burying the seeds

What say yOU?

I wouldn't be messing with it this close to season outside of a normal agriculture practice...

bush hog. You are correct disking it will bury too much of your seed and the field wont last as long until they eat it all out.

We've always had better luck just taking the seed straight from the bag, and scattering it via a hand broadcaster directly onto the sandbar.

You can't imagine how that brings them in.

personally i like cutting it, burning it, disking strips... the cleaner ther field the more birds. I like my whole fied disk better. We hunted a big field yest evening and probably killed 500ish birds in one hunt here in south ms. Just a fully disk field

Clip it low imo. Especially with a chance of rain everyday this week.

What exactly does burning do? I've heard of people doing it I've never asked why. I'm damn sure not a farmer.

Burning it just cleans it off. They like as little cover as possible so they can see a ways off and it also makes it easier for them to find the grain or other feed.

Just disc strips, not the whole thing. And if in La. make damn sure you don't do within a specified time frame because you could be breaking the law. Its called manipulation to harvest game animals, specifically doves, which is federally protected. Be careful or be kin to the judge.

Bush hog it then disk a path next to it. They get in that fresh dirt and find small rocks that help them digest the seeds.

You can bush hog or disk standing grain for doves. Can not do it for any other migrating species like ducks and geese though. They changed this a few years back.

I just scatter cracked corn on top of field in an attempt to grow grits. I always have a lot of doves but have yet to harvest grits!

We always just cut strips in our millet. Killed piles of them.
