The Houston Chronicle reports the Texans have "agreed in principle" on a long-term extension with LE J.J. Watt.
Financial details should be leaked in the morning, but the sides have been working on this deal "for several weeks." There's a good chance it will make Watt the highest paid defender in league history. Watt spoke publicly about his desire for a long-term commitment from the Texans in mid-August, which may have sparked discussions. Watt, 25, has 36.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles across his first three NFL seasons to go with an incredible 27 pass breakups, earning him the nickname "J.J. Swatt." Pro Football has graded Watt as its No. 1 overall 3-4 defensive end in back-to-back years.
So Watt + Clowney for at least 4 more years. Good for them.

I'm not a Texans fan but he is worth every penny.

And the assumption is that he'll be the highest paid defender ever, but I don't agree. He has 2 seasons under contract, one relatively dirt cheap one this season and one ~$8m or so next season. The early extension would allow the Texans to pay him less than, say, Revis.

He wasn't holding out. I think the Texans would have been better off waiting 2 years, then franchising him the 3rd if they don't work anything out.

The Texans need to get a secondary to pair with Watt and Clowney.

He doesn't do anything but play or study the game of football. His teammates know he doesn't have a life outside of football. (other than giving his time to the community) He really strives to be the best that's ever played the game and everything he does proves that. Props to him

$3m more total than Williams, $6m more guaranteed. But Watt was only going to make about $12m total over the next two seasons, whereas Williams was a FA.

Shows how ridiculous the QB market is when Alex Smith gets more per year than arguably the best defensive player in the league

Mos def. I just hope Cam Jordan doesn't get antsy after hearing about the deal.

Money well spent. Clowney and him are going to be so fun to watch.

Meh. Smith has the ball in his hand every single play.
The Texans would be a playoff team if they could replace JJ with Alex Smith imo

I think they jumped the gun on this. Dude is a beast, Texans blow and they need his leadership and his ability to anchor the D. I guess they need too spend the money, not a bad way to do it If you have to.

What? It's true. It boggles my mind the owner is in rebuild mode right now. They could have picked up 4 QBs in this years draft better than what they have. And it's literally the only missing piece they have to be a playoff team.
Alex smith has already proven he's capable of leading a team to the playoffs. And he'd have all the tools in Houston to do the same.

I just disagree. Their defense would be pretty awful without Watt and I don't think Alex Smith is good enough to put that team on his back.
