In all my decades of watching LSU football, I never saw so many unblocked defenders tackle our backs. What happened last night that left so many guys free? I honestly don't think that Wisconsin physically dominated us as badly as most do. I just saw way too many guys making tackles without a single LSU player touching them. Did they confuse us that badly, did they simply outnumber us at the point of attack, or did I not see what I thought I saw? Thanks for your response.

They loaded the box and our Oline missed assignments. Their pre snap movement confused us as well

They run blitzed alot #7 Caputo one of their safeties.

We made an adjustment in 4th and made them pay.

9 people in the box. Wisconsin knew that Les Miles wouldn't let Jennings throw the ball for most of the game. Also, their defensive lineman were very good at taking on double teams and not allowing the LSU offensive line to break off to the second level. Meaning that the Wisconsin linebackers were not having to fight off of blockers.

They gap assigned... and they played disciplined. When holes were there, they had 8 guys ready to fill em up

LSU gave looks that Wisconsin sees a lot when they go against each other in practice. A lot of 2 tight type stuff. It would be like in basketball if a princeton offense team met a team that also runs the Princeton offense. Plus, until we threw the ball Wisconsin could sell out run 80% of the time

Our biggest holes and longest runs came AFTER we had successfully thrown the ball vertical

They really didn't. They left their safeties back for the most part, but they had their LBs run blitzing almost every play. Their LBs were hitting the holes faster than out RBs were. We made them pay over the middle in the second half and they backed out of the run blitzes allowing us to run the ball.

They loaded the box and 6 guys can't block 7. It's really that simple.

As we prove we can pass the ball then those running lanes will open up.

They run a 3-4 with a lot of pre-snap movement. Their d tackles try to absorb the blocks and tie up our o line so their Lb's are free to blast through the holes and meet our RB's head on. With so much movement before the snap, it's tough to play our assignments. What really helped us ( besides Herring getting hurt), was we started to spread them out (3-4 receiver sets) .

Pre snap movement confused our guys. Once they got the hang of what they were doing in the second half it was over. Semi truck wide holes for hilliard.

Right and it made sense. I think most realistic fans forsaw us running the ball predictably in the first half. Forcing Jennings to throw was dangerous when we were unsure about his capabilities. He has weapons and trey Quinn will be a deadly slot receiver this year with diarse posting up

Watch in the first three quarters how fast those two deep safeties ran downhill for run support. We opened up holes in the 4th quarter out of the shotgun. That was after we were forced to pass and it loosened the defense up a tad.

Our successful runs came when we went to 1 back sets.

When we lined up "I", they pretty much feasted on us.

Numbers game.

And Pocic making the calls up there first game out with their line shifting on almost every obvious running play didn't help either.

I agree with you there. That was a result of poor play calling. I thought there were more opportunities to burn them on play action on 1st and 2nd down.

I formation allowed for safety to creep up in the box and allowed them more stunts, when we went to the 31 set(3 wide 1 back) the safety had to back off which allowed the oline to match up better.
