I've never done any sort of maintenace on this computer at all... Its about 5 years old and starting to get a little lag to it. Is there anything I can do to clear it out and get her running smooth again?

reinstall the operating system will do wonders. Unless you use an app cleaner or something similar, you might miss some preferences that will bog you down when deleting applications.
of course, ram goes a long way too but it depends on what you are running and how much you have already.

I upgraded a couple of late 2008 MBP's to 4GB RAM and the latest OSX - Mavericks and it's like having two new computers. With the OS upgrade I reclaimed about 1GB of hard drive space on each.

Up your ram and get an SSD... I just did both and my mid 2009 MBP is running smooth.
