Question for the Extant junkies about the last episode

Anyone catch the part when "Katie" told her mom that she didn't want to go back to the dark place where dead people are? Right after that the little girl put her hand on her face then obviously flips her the bird...my wife says this was coincidence...I think it was something the producers approved for a few to pick up on as the character was obviously becoming manipulative. Was it intended?
