Anyone know anything about these things?

Is there an alternative to using the cox rental?

I was about to buy my sister a birthday modem and thought to look at her modem first.

It has a cable running from the modem into her phone jack.

Is there some reason Cox did that? Cheaper? Easier to force people to keep their equipment? Illuminati?

Any options or is she stuck using their equipment?

I have both telephony modem and separate DOCSIS 3 modem as the former is only DOCSIS 2. Cox has always provided the telephony modem at no charge, but I bought the D3 modem myself about 4 years ago to take advantage of channel bonding. I'm not aware that you can buy telephony modems, but I would think Cox is providing DOCSIS 3 versions now, hopefully still included in the price of the phone service so there would be no rental fee as there is when you're just getting Internet.

Ah. Thanks. I'll leave the modem alone then and just get here a wireless router.
