I prefer charcoal, but this is for a gift

Looking for something in the 200-350 range that's either a gas or infrared grill preferably with a side burner.

Any suggestions? Any comments on infrared vs traditional gas? Can you get a better sear with infrared? That's what this will be primarily used for. Steaks, fajitas, etc.

$319.20 at Lowes

this is an infrared model. I had one for about 4 years. Cooked great but, the stuff that would normally end up in the bottom of the grill stays on top of the infrared plate. it's harder to clean than a traditional gas grill and the infrared plate rusts because everything stays on it.

Is that the one you have?

I can get that same one for cheaper on Amazon with free shipping with my prime account :)

"Had" .. I actually switched back to traditional. I loved the way the infrared cooked. no flare-ups. I just got really tired of the hassle with cleaning the thing.

ETA: i'm going to work on creating a plate for my traditional grill with a bunch of holes in it and lay it under the grates on the flame guards.

Yeah some of the reviews I was reading complained about cleaning the grates. Is it really that much of a pain in the arse?

each grate has it's own infrared thing. they come apart for cleaning so, it can be done...but, now you have twice as many pieces to clean. And the grates are really thick so, a normal wire brush doesn't really work and the tool they sell to clean the grates is useless.

i guess it really depends on the individual. it takes a lot of patience. i just got tired of it.

If you're willing to go to $400, you can get a Weber Spirit.
