Interview with David Chase..

quote:

I had been talking with Chase for a few years when I finally asked him whether Tony was dead. We were in a tiny coffee shop, when, in the middle of a low-key chat about a writing problem I was having, I popped the question. Chase startled me by turning toward me and saying with sudden, explosive anger, "Why are we talking about this?" I answered, "I'm just curious." And then, for whatever reason, he told me. And I will tell you. So keep reading.

Well. NOW he's dead, sure.

But he showed up in Burt Wonderstone just last year.

Gandolfini is dead in real life so that's that. nobody wants to see Travolta playing Tony Soprano in a movie

I don't believe creators this far removed...they tend to still want to work on things even though it is finished...don't believe me? then why are harry potter fans always bitching about something...and don't get me started on George lucas (he takes it a step further and goes back and changes it)

IMO, tony is dead...the next logical shot in the sequence should be tony's POV of meadow entering the diner, but at that moment it is black...because he has a bullet in his head.

that whole last scene was so well done. there are many youtube breakdowns on all the symbolism in that last scene. it really was a perfect ending to that scumbag Tony Soprano.

Please make the title less spoilery. Some of us haven't seen the show yet, and many of us have recently started it with it being newly available on Amazon Prime.

This.

It seems pretty obvious based on evidence (even in that article itself, which I read a little while ago and almost posted here) that he should be dead. For Chase to say either way at this point seems a bit disingenuous.

To me he's dead. I'm just passing along what David Chase said!

When I asked Chase about the cut to black, he said that it is about Poe's poem "Dream Within a Dream."

From wiki:

quote:

The poem dramatizes a confusion in watching the important things in life slip away

So he's losing his family, and he's either being shot or the story continues and Carlo's testimony puts him in prison.

I just can't believe, the way the last scene was shot, that he didn't die at the end.

I just take it as a given that he is dead to such a degree that I'm pretty close minded to any opinion that says he's alive, even if that opinion comes from David Chase.

To be the far more interesting and unanswered question is who gave the order. My theory is that the New York outfit and Paulie got together and did it as a way to truly seal the peace between them.

Phil Leotardo and Tony Soprano caused the mini war by letting their pride and egos get in the way of business. Phil paid the price so it only makes sense that Tony would have to, as well. Like the New York side would truly submit to being under Tony's de facto control.

tony is a mixed bag...there is good and bad, but yeah, he's not a good guy. He is a character at the crossroads, or trying to backtrack

he doesn't really become full scumbag until after his coma.

I think chase is just pissed that so many hated him by the end and wanted him dead that he is backtracking

If Tony didn't die then that was the worst ending ever.

But he did.

anyone involved in the mafia is by definition not a"good guy". the entire organization is involved in extorting money from innocent business owners, illegal activities of every sort, loansharking, etc...murder, tax evasion, general scumbags.

Before the show ended, there was some talk of a movie so I never thought it was a real ending.

That takes nothing from the final scene. Whether he died or not, the scene was exceptional at showing how miserable most moments were for Tony. He saw death coming all of the time from any angle.
