Looks like as an employer I am about to have to pay my first unemployment wages. A few questions I can't seem to find specific answers for...

1. How do I figure out how much I will have to pay an employee after termination?

2. How long will I have to pay looks like 26 weeks but can't seem to figure that out.

TIA

Are you positive that he will get unemployment? What was the reason for termination...was everything documented?

I believe that maximum benefits they can get is $258/week. Depends on how much money they have made in the past 1-1.25 years. As for how much you will have to pay, there is a formula that the unemployment office uses to determine your Unemployment Insurance rates. You will have to check with them.

26 weeks is the maximum, or until they get another job. In the past there have been extensions available to go past the 26 weeks, but not sure if that is the case now.

Thanks you are confirming what I have put together but it was all a few years old and wasn't sure if it had changed. I have reason and documentation also.

Good. Then fight it and show that the employee was fired for some form of misconduct so that you are not required to pay more on your unemployment insurance.

Unemployment benefits are only good for 26 weeks. After the benefits are exhausted, they have to wait until the claim year ends before they can file for anymore benefits. Extensions are not available since being cut by the federal government in December. When that employee files a claim, you can acutally dispute that claim if you feel they shouldn't receive the benefits. The max Louisiana pays is $247, however, it is not guaranteed the employee will receive the max. The min pay is $10. The max amount of benefits are based on a "base period", which are the four quarters prior to the quarter the claim is filed. For example, if your employee files a claim today, the base period would be April 2013-March 2014.

Why would you pay? You didn't have insurance?
